It was quiet. The sound of the tires splashing into puddles and the raindrops on the windshield pierced the somber atmosphere in the car like a blade to the gut. It had been two weeks since the accident happened, yet to the three it still felt the same as when they'd first heard the news. Cody, Jai and Spits were completely numb. Their mother had died, leaving them alone with each other, and they had no idea how to move forward. Their mother had never really planned for her death, as she only ever lived in the present, so the kids weren't sure what she would've wanted them to do. Their mom was flashy, vibrant, just the light of every dark day. A laugh so contagious that she could walk into a room and have everyone in it rolling on the floor. And with her death came the deafening silence, which had always been shadowed by her. The silence was near unbearable, yet unbreakable. No one knew what to say; their mother had always taken care of that.

Cody decided to put together a small service, which was intended to be more of a celebration of her life, rather than a tribute to her passing. But that didn't help the silence in the car. The only noises to be heard were the wind and rain colliding with the vehicle, and Spits' light sobs coming from the backseat. No one said a word the entire ride there.

The service was quick and simple, with friends and family together to remember the beautiful woman's vibrant life, and they tried to keep things as lighthearted as a funeral service could be. The siblings decided to have their mother cremated, and to spread her ashes as part of the service, which was taking place on her favourite hidden cove. She loved going there with her kids, and for all of them, there were countless good memories connected to this spot. With everything said and done, the service had ended and the afterparty could begin. The service definitely helped uplift Cody and Spits' moods, however, Jai still seemed to have a blank stare in his eyes. He seemed to still be in the same state of shock he fell into when Cody broke the news to him. This was Jai's first experience with death, and to him, it made him feel as though he was trapped. Stuck in a state of disbelief, anger, sadness; grief. It was overwhelming for him. But this afterparty was supposed to be fun, right?

'Parties are supposed to help cheer people up,' he thought. 'So why does it still feel like I'm drowning? Everyone is having a good time...everyone's laughing and having fun..so why do I still only want to hear her laughter...' Jai began spiraling, in the middle of this party. He was sweating, shaking. He began tearing up and hyperventilating. The world felt like it was spinning, and the air felt suffocating. People began to notice him, asking if he was alright. He couldn't answer, he felt like he was screaming but his mouth was sewn shut; his grip on his soda cup growing tighter and tighter with every breath. Through the tears and cloudy eyes he saw Cody begin approaching him. He couldn't bear it. Dropping his solo cup, Jai pushed through the crowd of people in his living room and locked himself in his bedroom. He didn't know what else to do. Shaking, he looked around his room, and started reaching for the current only constant he had. Jai took a few hits off his wax pen, then grabbed a water from the mini fridge by his bed and sat down. Looking around his room, he felt safe. His heart rate began to steady, and he felt the sting of tears against his burning face start to lighten up. Taking a couple more hits, he downed the water and put in earbuds to drown out the noise from the party. He remembered his mom always told him to remove himself from stressful situations before things got bad, and he could only wonder if this was what she was talking about.
