Chapter 5: That takes care of that.

Thank you for your patience, this is another short one, but its something!

  The walk started with some banter, but went quiet after your mind was consumed by the day. Thinking about the reality of everything makes your insides twist, and your heart feels like its dangling out of your body on bungee cords. Curses? Jujutsu Tech? ...Jujutsu? These words meant nothing to you hours ago.

  How would you even explain this to your parents. It would be easier to tell them that you're running away to join the circus.

  Which may actually be what you end up telling them.

  Come to think of it, none of the sorcerer's really thought to give advice or try to elaborate on how you'd even enroll, since you are literally just a kid. Man, your life is really sloppily written! You ask Yuji about this.

  "Wait, you have parents? I completely assumed you were like. One of those types that has to live by themselves cause their parents are either dead or not around. Man..." He held his hand to his head stupidly.

  "I'll be wholly honest, the main reason I agreed to enroll was for the chance to get some shuteye without curses looking at me like a tic tac on the sidewalk. I never thought far ahead enough to think that maybe normal people don't let their kids run off to do scooby gang shit and that I'd have a lot of explaining to do."

  "..." Yuji squints at you, holding his hand on his chin thoughtfully. "Have you thought of telling them that you're running away to join the circus?"

  You look at him, blankly. Coming out of his mouth? You're tossing that idea in the wastebasket.

  "I'm guessing that idea is out." The two of you keep walking, and he turns to you a couple times without saying anything. "Do you really eat tic tacs off the sidewalk?"

  "I don't know, Yuji, what if the world was made of pudding? Would that be fucked up or what?" You want to put this boy in a jar and shake him. Now is not the time!

  "Like, totally not judging if you do. I ate a bagel off the cafeteria floor once."

  "You know, I think I saw you do that." You shake your head and sigh. You start giggling, though, because aside from almost dying, you've been having fun. More than you've had in awhile, actually.

  Yuji seems very pleased that you've lightened up a bit, and he nudges you with his elbow.

  "Hey, you don't have to decide on anything tonight. Don't stress it." He reassured you. He's really kind, in a way you feel like you don't really deserve.

  The two of you start to come up on your street. You look at him and you know the two of you will be good friends. That thought reminds you that he has done you 3 favors today; saving you, buying you food, and walking you home. So its settled, you have to find some way to repay him.

  You reach your door and there's an awkward pause.

  "Well, it was really nice meeting you, [Y/N]." His face bearing that ever-warm smile. "I hope we can hang out again sometime, even if you don't feel like doing sorcery- I could still maybe teach you some things to defend yourself."

  "Yeah, that sounds nice. I'll shoot you a text tomorrow?"

  "Sounds good, see you later!" He offers you a fist bump and you oblige, and he makes his way back as you open the door.

  When you walk in, it's about 8:30 p.m. and dead quiet, and thats when you realize just how late you are getting home. You call out.

  "Hello? I'm home!"

  You probably should have sent a text or something, but when that dawns on you, you realize that the phone works both ways. Why hadn't either of your parents called you?

  Taking a few steps forward, the creaking of the floorboards makes you feel like a stranger in your own home. Your stomach churns when you start making your way to the kitchen. It's like your body knew something was off before you were aware of it.

  You hear a bloodcurdling noise that makes you dart right back out of the door you left wide open, not recognizing it as your own despairing cry.
