Meredith hopped down the stairs with her last box as she entered the garage to put it in her jeep. The jeep helped her escape from her mother and was a gift she got for her 17th birthday. She went back inside and found her mom in the study.
"Mom, I'm leaving for Dartmouth." She stated as her mom looked up from her tablet and nodded.
"That's great honey. I'll see you at thanksgiving. Make sure to focus on your studies and no boys to distract you. Cause you know what happened last time." Ellis replied as she rolled her eyes. A lump began to form in Meredith's throat as her mom said that, remembering the last time she got involved with someone it ended horribly.
"Okay, well, love you mom. I'll call you when I get there." Meredith said as she turned around to walk back to her jeep.
"I have back to back surgeries all day and don't have time to coddle you." Ellis replied coldly, keeping her eyes on her tablet. Meredith nodded in understanding, and left the room without another word and got into the driver's seat and started driving out of the drive away. Meredith could not wait to start her new life, a fresh start from everything that has happened here. She had already driven an hour and only had another left. She decided to stop for some drive through Starbucks and ordered a cold brew and a chocolate muffin for the road and kept on driving while sipping her coffee. She had finally arrived at Dartmouth and parked so she could get her id and her dorm room key. As she waited in line, she watched all the new freshmen move in as their parents helped them move in. A hint of jealousy hit Meredith, she had asked her mom to come with her but said she would be working and hadn't even bothered to ask if she could have the day off. She knew she shouldn't have even bothered asking her mom and wasn't sure why her mom would have said anything different. And if her mother had come with she probably would just be insulting the campus and how she should have picked Harvard instead. And as for her dad, well he didn't care enough to stick around so why would he even bother helping her to move into her college dorm. As soon as she got her key she went back to her car to get all her stuff to her dorm. As she unlocked the door to her dorm room she could see her roommate had already moved in. It was a two room double, so there was a little more privacy which Meredith was grateful for. Her roommate had moved her stuff to the next room. She assumed that she moved the furniture around as her bed was in the middle of the room. Meredith moved the furniture so it was to her liking and hung her clothes in the closet.
A tall Asian girl with thick black curly hair walked into her dorm, she guessed it was her roommate. It wasn't till she turned around she noticed Meredith's presence.
"Oh, hi I'm Cristina yang. So I'm guessing we are roommates . If it's okay with you I rearranged some stuff so we both have our own space." Cristina said as she pulled her hand up.
" Meredith Grey. Yeah that's totally fine. I'm kinda glad you did that. So thank you." Meredith replied as she shook her hands and started unpacking some of her boxes.
" Maybe after you finish we could grab dinner together considering you're the only person I know and I'd like to get to know you." Cristina suggested and Meredith nodded in agreement. They exchanged numbers. And just then two older people who Meredith thought to be Cristina's parents walked in.
"Cristina, we need to get going cause our plane is leaving in a few hours." Cristina's mom said and Cristina nodded as she followed them out to say goodbye. Meredith suddenly wished her mom was here, even though her mom wouldn't be the best at it she knew she would still have had comfort in her presence. The silent tears came rushing down her face. She quickly shrugged it off and continued unpacking. By the end of it she was exhausted and plopped herself on her new bed. She then heard the door, but didn't have the energy to look who it was.
"So do you want to go get dinner? Or are you too tired? Cause I totally understand..." Cristina started to say.
"No, no... I mean yes I want to go to dinner cause I'm starving." Meredith replied as she stood up to grab her purse as Cristina followed.
They sat at a table in the dining hall and sat silently at first.
"So where are you from?" Cristina asked, finally breaking the ice.
"Well, originally from Seattle but I grew up in Boston. How about you?" Meredith replied.
"California, born and raised. And your parents?" Cristina asked as Meredith's eyes widened. Shit she thought. As she hated talking about her family, as she knew her family was the definition of complicated and had no idea how to explain it, especially to those who had perfect families.
"Well..." she coughed, "my moms a surgeon." Meredith said quietly.
"Shut up, your mother is the Ellis grey?" She asked and Meredith nodded and now knowing that Cristina was pre med as only people in the medical field knew of her mother.
"I would kill to have Ellis Grey as a mother. Are you premed?" Cristina asked as Meredith nodded and played with her food.
"Yeah for now, but I'm still not 100% sure. Same for you I'm guessing." She stated still looking down at her plate. The only reason she was considering pre-med was to prove her mother wrong and show that she could succeed despite everything she had gone through.
"Yep, I want to be a cardio god." She said and Meredith looked up and smiled. They began to warm up to each other and Meredith began to think that this wasn't so bad after all.
