"REGULUS!" Remus shouted loudly as he banged loudly on the young man's front door.
It had been three days now and Sirius hadn't made a move yet.

James had tried to reach Sirius almost immediately after Regulus' announcement, but he hadn't been succesful.

"Bloody hell!" he muttered and took a deep breath: "REGULUS ARCTERUS BLACK! YOU WILL OPEN-"

Just then, the door was ripped open.
A tired pair of grey eyes stared at him accusingly.
"What, in the bloody world, are you doing?" he asked, annoyed.

"I want to talk to him! No arguments!" Remus tried to sound as confident as possible. But deep down, he was so incredibly scared that Sirius was not alright. He never wanted this moment to arrive, always trying to keep his best friend safe.

"That's not possible," Regulus replied, sighing and opening the door a little wider.
"He's not talking to anyone. Not even to me...". He rubbed his forehead and only then Remus saw the dark bags under the boy's eyes. How small and defeated he actually looked, compared to the confident young man he was just mere days ago.

"Can I at least come in?"

Regulus glanced briefly into his flat, still stopping Remus from entering, before he seemed to capitulate.

"Sure. Come on in. I've just made tea," he said, stepping aside so Remus could enter.

"Thanks."

Silently, the two sat down at the kitchen table. They both took small sips from the black cups, one after the other.

"So... How was the funeral?" Remus finally asked cautiously. He avoided looking the younger boy into his eyes.
"Well. It was just a funeral..." Regulus said and Remus realised immediately that he was avoiding the question.

"Okay, then another question: how did your parents really die? We both know they didn't drive."
Regulus closed his eyes to gather his words and took a few deep breaths.

"They were really in a car accident..." Remus raised an eyebrow questioningly. He didn't believe him.
"But not in the way you think," Regulus continued, still not looking into the eyes of his counterpart.

"They were out for a walk, which is strange enough by itself, but Bella said they were talking about their inheritance... Anyway, this mad bus came and it went 'whoosh' once," he made a wiping gesture with his hand.
There was a resigned expression on his face.
Maybe he didn't even care.
Who could blame him

"Their heir? I thought you were both already disinherited?" Remus asked, confused.

"Technically just Sirius... But I haven't turned my back on them for that long. They just talked about disinheriting me at home, but they never actually did it."

He hesitated briefly.

"Maybe they were hoping I would come back to them."
"That sounds plausible." Remus nodded slowly, staring into nothingness. "And also really desperate and pathetic..."

Suddenly an idea came to him.

"Have you ever thought about whether they only invited you to the funeral to get your new money?"
What he didn't expect was for Regulus to actually agree with him.
"Yes, I did. But only after the funeral..." he mumbled, burying his face in his hands.

"Why does that sound like you're ashamed of it?"
"BECAUSE IT IS!" He spat at Remus, looking at him desperately. "Because it bloody well is..." he whispered again.

"I-it's all my fault!" Regulus' lower lip began to tremble dangerously, but he tried to remain strong.
"I-I left him alone... And now he won't talk to anyone!"

By now, he had to control himself with full concentration to prevent tears from escaping his eyes. But it didn't work.
Fat tears slowly made their way down and heavy sobs were escaping Regulus' mouth. His face buried in his hands.

But Regulus knew one thing, he didn't deserve to cry.
He had been telling himself that the whole time and until now, itseemed to be working. Even if it hurt.

"But that's not why it's your fault!" Remus reassured him cautious.
Without a second thought, he pulled his best friend's brother into a warm hug.
Not that Regulus would ever admit it, but that was exactly what he needed at that moment.

"Yes, that's exactly it. I lost sight of him because I thought my family would finally be nice. I literally let them TRICK me! They just wanted to get their hands on the money!" His voice grew louder and louder before it broke in despair.

After a few minutes, Regulus had regained his composure enough to reluctantly turn away from Remus' embrace.
Embarrassed, he sat up straight again and looked down at the floor.

"'Scuse me," he mumbled sheepishly.
"Why are you apologising? Everyone needs a hug sometimes."
But Regulus still avoided eye contact.

"No..."
It was only then that Remus realised.
"Oh my-" He had forgotten for a moment that the two brothers had never received human affection from other people.

He wasn't used to getting answers like that from Sirius anymore.

Remus remembered that the older of the Black brothers had struggled for a long time to allow at least a small amount of affection.
That was the part of his childhood that the two of them had never really talked about.

"It's okay, you know?" Regulus looked up questioningly.
"Feeling weak for a change," Remus explained.

The younger boy shook his head vehemently.
"Of course!" Remus replied firmly and took Regulus' hand.

At the touch of the cold silver ring on his index finger, Regulus flinched, his hand already cold.

"I'm sorry," Remus apologised immediately and took his hand back. He had assumed that the touch would do Regulus good, but the opposite was true. Or so Remus thought.
"No," the black-haired man immediately contradicted. "That's not it!"

He assumed he knew what Remus was thinking.
The latter looked at him in confusion.

"Your ring," Regulus pointed a finger at it.
Remus immediately looked at it, a worry line on his forehead.
"It was cold," Regulus explained with a grin.

Relieved, the young man across from him closed his eyes. Sirius had given him this ring for his 16th birthday. After more than five years, he still wore it every day with joy.

Whenever he felt sad or worried, he fiddled with the ring until he calmed down.

A moonstone was set into the ring and '𝒲ℴ𝓁𝒻𝓈𝓉𝒶𝓇' was engraved on the inside in curved lettering. Sirius had had her ship's name engraved for fun. At the time, all of Hogwarts had been in favour of the two of them finally getting together. It had been something of an inside joke.

Nevertheless, the sight of the lettering had almost brought tears of joy to his eyes.

At the thought of Sirius, the warm feeling that had spread through his stomach disappeared and the smile on his face vanished completely.

"D-do you think... H-he would talk to me?" he asked.
Regulus looked up in surprise. He hesitated.
He knew Sirius wasn't talking to him. He could even understand it.

But as a matter of fact he didn't doubt for a moment that Sirius wouldn't talk to the boy, he had loved more than anything since 4th year.

He raised his hands in surrender. "You're welcome to try."
