We all know that in order for ancestors to cross over to see their living relatives in the land of the living, the family must do the following traditions by Halloween.

1) The Offrenda:

The alter is the most important part of preparing for Dia Los Muertos, as this is the display of the photos of the ancestors. Also the offrenda represents the four elements of the earth: Air, Earth, fire and water.

How the families represent the offrenda for the four elements of the earth...

  - Fire: The candles that are lit to represent the element of fire on the Offrenda. The other is that of Copal incense that families burn on the Offrenda is a way to ward off evil spirits to help the spirits of the ancestors find their way to the offrenda

  - Earth: this element is represented by the food that families place on the Offrenda, mainly bread, earth is represented by the first harvest and the last seed dies.

  - Air: represented by papel picado or paper banners represent the wind on the Offrenda, these paper banner wave on the winds to help spirits of the ancestors find their way with help of alejebrehe spirit animals.

   - Water: is represented by a pitcher of water, said to quench the thirst of the spirits after coming to other side to visit their families, and  this is a common link to the nature of the world is well represented in the full Offrenda.
