Almost is a cruel word. It speaks of failure, of turning back, of buts and half-spoken ifs.
Yet almost is their word, and but is their half-spoken lie. Almost will be their shield all these long years of pretending, and almost will be their curse, when that shield becomes a dagger.
When the end comes, almost will be waiting. He will almost save his brother, and he will almost kill him. He will almost save his apprentice, but it will end in fire. He will almost save his master, but almost is too late. He will almost cheat fate, but failure is fate's victory.
She will almost let him go, she will almost walk away. She will almost turn her back on weakness, but he is her strength. She will almost be remembered, she will almost matter. They will almost sing her song — the song that was never meant to be sung.
She will almost find peace, she will almost be allowed to love him.
