It was around midnight when there was a soft tapping on his door. Dorian opened it and was face to face with Dylan. She kissed him, Dorian let out a soft moan leaning into the kiss. Dylan pulled away smiling at him, Dorian smiled back feeling a certain level of excitement sneaking around like this. Dorian grabbed her hand and they snuck out of the house. The screen door tapped shut silently and they raced across the porch towards the docks.
Dorian saw a basket filled with different things on the fan boat. There were low lanterns dully shining in the night hanging off of the boat. Light danced on the murky water, the fog from the swamp created a dream-like feel. Dylan carefully climbed in and helped Dorian silently before taking a long stick and shoving it off the dock. It took a while before Dylan turned on the engine and they headed deep into the swamp.
The fan was low as Dylan was carefully moving around the swamp. Dorian shifted a bit in his seat too scared to say anything or do anything while on the boat. Finally, he saw the shack lit up with lanterns and candles. His eyes widened, Dylan did say she was going to make this romantic... But he had thought she was kidding. Dylan saw his expression and grinned. "You like it?" She asked. "It's... Very pretty," Dorian said looking at everything. Dylan shut off the engine and helped Dorian out of the boat before tying it to the dock. She got the basket off of the boat and they headed inside.
Things were cleaner on the inside now. It smelt fresh like roses, Dorian spotted the rose petals everywhere and smiled. If there was one thing he learned from this trip, the Ramseys sure as hell knew how to work with what they had. Dorian sat down on the bed admiring the flower petals. He didn't want to move them. They felt nice, Dorian rubbed some petals between his fingers. He looked over at Dylan who was digging through the basket.
"You wanna get drunk?" She offered holding up an unbranded bottle of alcohol. "Made it myself." She said teasingly. "It's honey rum." Dorian looked surprised, "You brew?" He asked, "Yeah there's a bunch of brewing equipment in the basement, Granny was a bootlegger back in the day." She said popping the cork and pouring the rum into a couple of glasses. "I would've brought the wine but it wasn't ready yet." She informed Dorian handing him a glass.
"You're legal right?" She asked, "Yeah." Dorian said exasperated, "You?" He turned the tables on her, Dylan took a swig of the honey rum and grinned. "Sure." She said teasingly. "Dylan." Dorian said exasperated, "I am. Calm down." Dylan said exasperated. Dorian smiled and then took a sip. It tasted just like Dylan did earlier. "Were you testing this earlier?" He asked, "Yeah." Dylan said, "How'd you know?"
"It tastes like you did earlier." He said, Dylan, eyed him and snorted. "Geez," She said flustered. "I just want to get drunk and fool around. No need to get all Shakespeare on me." Dorian gaped at her, "I'm not getting all Shakespeare on you, it was an observation!" He exclaimed. "Yeah, yeah, everything that comes out of that pretty mouth of yours sounds like it," Dylan said teasingly.
Dorian smiled at her, "You know I'd like to hear you call me by my name at least once Dylan." He remarked, "Dorian." Dylan didn't even hesitate as Dorian had hoped. He wanted to see more of her flustered expression. Aside from that one moment, Dylan was rather unflappable. Dorian stared at her feeling heat on his cheeks.
His ears tingled hearing her say his name. "Don't say I never did anything for you." She said grinning, she was clearly amused by his reaction. Dorian couldn't help but laugh feeling a giddy feeling bubble in his stomach. The two of them joked around and poked around until half of the bottle was gone. At this point, their faces were flushed and they were curled up on the bed together. Dylan laid on her back Dorian on his side.
"My family used to live in a trailer that had only two or three bedrooms." Dylan spoke up, "We had to put plywood on the floors to cover up holes and every night we'd hear people screaming and fighting." Dorian rested his head on her chest listening to this. "You don't know how much the bare minimum is sometimes a luxury," Dylan said quietly. "Running water, a roof that doesn't leak, appliances that work. I get that the house and this place isn't fancy to you. But... I don't have to worry about any of the kids getting sick anymore or mama getting sicker." Dylan said softly.
