"TIGHTER." MAMA TELLS THE maid who was tying Prudence's corset.
...tactless mama.
"Tighter!" Mama repeats.
"Is she to breathe, Mama?" Penelope asks, concerned for our sister.
"I was able to squeeze my waist into the size of an orange and a half when I was Prudence's age." Mama tells Penelope, tightening Prudence's corset making her let out a grunt.
"And look at what all you have achieved by having a two inch waist." I mumble under my breath, and Penelope hides her laugh.
"Your sister shall do the same." Mama continues, oblivious to my words.
Mama was like this in all things. Even what we wore was dictated by her. Prudence always wore green, Philippa lavender, Penelope that awful shade of yellow and I wore shades of pink. I thank heavens that today we could only wear white.
Far better odds might exist in the household of the widowed Viscountess Bridgerton. A shockingly prolific family, noted for its bounty of perfectly handsome sons and perfectly beautiful daughters.
