Chapter 6
The smell of crispy bacon wakes her up. Her nose wiggles slightly and mouth waters. The bed next to her was empty and she opens her eyes to see bright harsh light filtering through the curtains. Slowly she sits up, her back clicking as she stretches. With lazy movements she crawls out of bed and dresses into jean shorts and a baggy shirt. Her wardrobe hardly consisted of anything else.
She takes one look at her tangled blonde hair and decides to leave it, it wouldn’t stay untangled for long anyway. She jogs down the stairs and to the kitchen, her stomach rumbling. But she slams to a stop in the doorway to the kitchen. There at the stove was her dad, his head bobbing as he flipped the bacon.
“Oh! Your awake, bout time too.” He comments as he catches sight of her. With fast flips he packs some bacon onto a plate and puts it on the bench next to her. “Eat up, I didn’t burn it. Honest.” She blinks.
“Where’s Ryder?”
“Oh, your brothers gone out to see someone, seemed pretty excited too. Told me to tell you that he would be back for lunch, maybe a little later. If I didn’t know any different I’d think he was seeing a girl.” He chuckles, dancing over to the fridge and pulling out more bacon. Serena’s teeth clench. Without another word she grabs the bacon and strides into the lounge, falling onto the couch with a huff. She picks up a bit of bacon and rips into it, chewing furiously and swallowing before biting off some more with the same amount of vengeance.
“Wow, calm down tiger. The bacons already dead.” Her dad jokes as he plops down onto the couch next to her. She glares at him with narrowed eyes. Her dads humour fades. “What’s wrong tiger?”
“Nothing” She mutters, turning her eyes forward to stare at a spot of the carpet. Her dad huffs.
“Now don’t give me this nothing bullshit.” He chuckles at the looks she sends him. “Yes I can swear, doesn’t mean you can though. Anyway, I raised you, so I know when my little girls in a huff. Now what’s the matter?” Serena sighs, putting the now empty plate on the coffee table in front of them. She starts to fiddle with her fingers on her lap, a nervous gesture she couldn’t seem to get rid of.
“Ryder has got a girl he’s started seeing.” She admits, blinking slightly at the large grin that covers her father’s face.
“That’s excellent! I didn’t think he would find someone else after... well… you know” He mutters, his voice still laced with satisfaction. She tenses slightly before forcing herself to relax.
“It’s not ‘excellent’. If he has a girlfriend, that means he won’t be able to hang out with me! And what if she’s a bitch!?” Serena hisses, her teeth gritting with the thought of her brother getting a girlfriend, let alone a bitchy one. Her father chuckles, ignoring the glare sent in his direction. Brave man.
“He will still hang out with you. He adores you. And your brother has better judgement then that. Apart from in 10th grade when he went out with that girl who was the rudest devil I have ever met. Apart from you of course.” Her father muses, a sly smile on his face. “But seriously, he would never ditch you for a girl. Isn’t there a saying ‘hoes before…’ What is it again?”
“Bros before hoes dad.” Serena mutters, swiping a hand down her face. It was hard to stay angry with her father around.
“That’s the one. So don’t worry about it. And if he does ditch you, you could always hang out with me.” He pats her knee before avoiding the hand she swipes out at him. His chuckles fill the air as he grabs her plate and heads back towards the kitchen. She shakes her head and stands up, heading for the back door.
