Chapter 5
Serena sprints out of the hospital, ignoring the stares and whispers. Once out she sprints straight for the trees, and when she gets out of sight she shifts mid run. A tearing sound echoes through the forest and her footsteps change from two to four. Her paws drum against the ground and she weaves between the trees, her mind focused inwards.
She was happy for him. She knew how much he wanted an imprint. But she was also irritated, annoyed, angry and sad. He wouldn’t spend a lot of time with her, and she’ll never admit it but she loved spending time with her brother. He was the one that helped her through the troubled time.
He’s going to leave me. He won’t have any time for me. All he’ll talk about it her. Her. Her. Her.
She snaps her teeth in annoyance and her growls rumble through the trees as she lengthens her stride, pushing herself to go faster, and faster again. She wanted to feel the burn in her legs as her muscles protested. She was acting selfish, and she knew it. A stream comes into view and she runs parallel to it, knowing it would lead to the beach.
Her mind was swirling, thoughts flying everywhere. She was happy. She was sad the next second. Angry the next, regretful next. She couldn’t stick to one.
She was happy that her brother found his imprint. He needed someone to love him in a romantic way. He never dated after that day, and she knew that he wanted to. He wanted what mum and dad had. Just like you used too… A thought whispers but she shoves it away, snapping her teeth again. She didn’t, she wouldn’t go through that again. But she wanted him to have someone.
She could smell the beach up ahead, and she turns running within the trees along it. The sound of families laughing and splashing reach her ears as they enjoyed each other’s company. Was it only 5 months ago since I had that?
She was sad that her brother wouldn’t be with her as much. She was used to them always being together. He made her feel better, made the darkness fade a little. She could relax around him; she knew he would never purposely hurt her. She was sad it wouldn’t be like that anymore. But you pushed him away didn’t you? You didn’t appreciate the effort he used. She snarls and purposely runs through a tree. A loud crack fills the air as she bursts through it. The tree falls to the ground and she continues on.
Anger pulsed through her next. He’s the one making you like this, making you feel. He was the only one who could do that. She was angry that the she wolf had to go with the men to talk to them. She was angry that they had to move to forks. The sound of the beach fades as she turns to run deeper into the forest, towards the hills. Her legs were on fire, but she ignores them, making them work harder. The pain helped.
And then regret came next. Who are you to act like this! You’re worthless, selfish, thinking that you have a right to miss him. Selfish thinking he shouldn’t have found her. Worthless!... The little voice hisses and she stops, letting out a loud mournful howl. Her howl trails off and she finally lets her legs collapse beneath her. She lay on the ground panting, her body tired. But her ears still flicker with the sound of paws thumping towards her a distance away.
Jacob runs through the trees, not even bothering to try and keep up with her. He follows her scent to the stream, and then along the beach. He notices what had caused the loud crack; a tree lay on its side, the trunk in jagged pieces.
He swiftly leaps over it, continuing on his way. A while later the trail turns back into the depth of the forest. He could tell she was getting exhausted. Bushes had broken branches and holes through them where she decided to push through them instead of jumping. He jumps them.
