Despite the usual pattern, the preparation for Ruby's birthday went very smoothly. The decor was hung without a fuss, presents were placed on the table and Princess counted each one dutifully three times before Sage had to drag her away. Cho and Lucky made a cake, it was a little lopsided looking but no kitchens or beanies had been harmed so they counted it as a win.
What proved to be their undoing, however, was a certain situation involving birthday candles, Charlie, and Ruby's flammable beanie.
It was Dee who had been in charge of putting the animals away for the party but the clan pets wielded puppy eyes very well and Dee got distracted quickly when helping Princess get her foot out of a mason jar. Once she had pried Princess's sock out of the container food was being set out and Dee completely forgot to close the door.
Of course, Lucky, who had been cuddling with the animals in that room could've done it but there was food and Lucky tended to get even more unobservant when she was hungry. The clan had decided to order pizza for this party since none of them trusted each other to make anything but pop tarts and instant noodles.
Ruby managed to grimace through the a cappella rendition of Happy Birthday completewith beatboxing and a little riff at the end before she was presented with the droopy birthday cake. One large candle (that looked less like a birthday candle and more like the scented candle from the mantle) was stuck in the middle and had three wicks, each lit by Sage because Lucky was afraid of fire and refused to do it.
"Make a wish!" Blossom cheered once Dee had stopped drumming on her lap and Cho had finished making turn-table noises.
Ruby shrugged. "I think I have everything I need, I don't need to make a-"
"MAKE A WISH!" Blossom repeated, a little more threateningly this time.
Ruby hastily leaned forward to blow out the candles. Before she could a rather large baboon wearing a superhero cape jumped on the table. Ruby jumped in surprise and the clan began yelling as both Pudding and Penelope shoved through to try and eat the cake. Unfortunately, Penelope wasn't the most delicate and ended up knocking over the cake in her enthusiasm. The candle went flying through the air, the fire catching on Ruby's beanie before crashing on the floor. The Pink Sands scent was then ground into the carpet by Penelope's hoof.
"STOP DROP AND ROLL!" Cho screeched at the top of her lungs while Sage chucked her cup of lemonade at Ruby's flaming head in hopes of extinguishing the flames. She missed and ended up soaking the girl's shirt instead.
"Hey! You just spilled lemonade on Pixane!" Ruby complained.
"Take off the hat! Take off the hat!" Princess screamed, jumping up and down.
Ruby hastily tried to find a part of her beanie that wasn't one fire and threw it to the ground. Penelope moved quickly to hit it repeatedly with her hoof until the blackened fabric was smushed beside the candle remains.
"Are you okay?" Lucky asked anxiously. "Do we need first aid?"
Ruby felt her hair carefully and breathed a sigh of relief when she realized it was only singed. She cast Cho a smug look. "See? I told you thicker beanies was a good idea."
"Whatever, they're still sweaty and scratchy." Cho huffed, adjusting her own thinner beanie.
Mango frowned and Dee looked at her curiously. "What's wrong?"
"Ruby needs to make a new wish." She said almost sadly.

Also, I'm thinking I should probably make a one-shot book so I don't make the birthday one-shots in the headcanon book but I have NO TIME so that idea will be put on the back burner.
