It was a bright Friday morning in late March. The recent bringing of strangely decent temperatures had led ranked battle officials to start the season off a bit earlier than usual, but it was off only by a week, so it was nothing too different. A few days ago, Y/n had received a letter letting them know their team had automatically qualified for the Square King Cup ranked season.

Y/n had been expecting the letter but was still overjoyed when they received it in the mail. They first blasted their group chat with love and praise before they politely asked them to shut up because it was 7 AM. After a few hours, they were on everyone because they need to train and only had about 3 days. They knew they only wanted to be good, but jeez.

The time they had to train was a little absurd, but they made it work. The letter had said the qualifier would be tower control. Lucky them, tower control happened to Y/n's worst type of ranked battle. But the team didn't care. they practiced from 9 to 6 every day, with occasional breaks, of course. A couple of passersby took a few minutes to watch and got back to whatever they were doing.

The night before the qualifiers, Y/n treated the team to a good dinner at their restaurant hangout near their residential district, and as AG was cracking up a joke, y/n noticed a group of yellow-haired individuals walking by the restaurant attracting a small crowd. They had been involved with their life and team a lot recently and they were too tired to deal with them right now.

When they and the team's leader Emperor made eye contact through the window, they, in the most discreet way possible, (that really wasn't discreet at all) shook their head no. But he, who wanted to get under their skin, saw them, smiled evilly, and opened the door.

Y/n let out a sigh and a groan. They wanted to go at least one week without interacting with them at all, but apparently, it was impossible. They looked at Team Emperor in all their elegance as they walked towards their booth.

"My, My, My, what have we here," Emperor said, in his usual arrogant tone, while looking directly at y/n. Heads turned as other people at the restaurant recognized the all-too-familiar voice. "If it isn't the underdogs." Emperor resumed. Suddenly, he grabbed y/n's face, tilting their face up to him, all while his golden yellow eyes stared into theirs, "Y/n, you're looking as radiant as ever."

Y/n jumped a little when he grabbed their face, absolutely paralyzed. If that wasn't enough, as soon as they heard those six little words, y/n's face turned a hot pink color and butterflies swarmed in their stomach. As he noticed, Emperor let a small sly smile crawl onto his face. What was he doing? They were just friends, and nothing more.

Y/n remembered when he stayed over to care for them, and everything started to piece together.

Suddenly, a waiter, a younger teen, came over, looking terrified. "Excu-excuse m-me," said the waiter. "Wou-would your party like to be moved to that bigger table over there?" Emperor looked over at him and responded, "Why yes. That sounds perfect." The waiter hurriedly walked toward the kitchen to grab some silverware and some plates. Y/n put their hands on the table, about to get up when Emperor placed his hand on theirs and said, "Ah, ah, ah. Allow me. He extended his other arm to them.

Hesitantly, they placed their hand in his, that hot pink color still remaining on their face. As Y/n stood up, their team was looking at them both in pure delight. They knew they would give them crap about it later, they could feel it. Seriously though, what on earth was Emperor doing? Why was he making these moves?

As the 2 rivaling teams headed to the larger table, Y/n couldn't bring themselves to let go of Emperor's hand. It felt warm and safe. When they approached the table, they let go of his hand and sat down. As they imagined, he sat down across from them. From a bit down the table, AU said, "Aww, look at the lovers! It's a shame they had to part ways!" Everyone who wasn't Y/n or Emperor laughed at the remark.

Y/n's face turned into a look of annoyance and turned pink. The laughter only got more intense. Emperor looked like he was a bit happy about the joke. "Cut it out, you guys," Y/n said angrily.

The laughter slowly faded, and the party began having idle chatter with those sitting closer to them. Y/n talked to Juniee, who was sitting next to them, and Emperor quietly talked to Eging. They saw Emperor whisper something to Eging and he laughed saying, "You're down bad, dude!"

He didn't really love them, did he? And they didn't really like it, did they?

A few minutes later, their food arrived. Y/n just got a cheeseburger but as always, Emperor ordered the most complicated thing on the menu. It started to make y/n think that he just wanted the staff to suffer. Even then, the food wasn't that complicated, it was just a steak.

The group ate their food in comfortable silence, but there would be the occasional whisper from Eging Jr. or Emperor. Y/n tried not to pay attention, but it was hard. Given how weird Emperor was acting, there was a huge chance the quiet chatter was about them.

Before long, everyone had pitched in to pay the bill and were walking home. They all talked amongst themselves, with Y/N trying not to talk to Emperor. They overheard Emperor whispering something like "Guys, go ahead and go home. I think it's time." Y/n felt like they shouldn't have heard that. They saw everyone quickly glance at each other while they gave an excuse to leave.

The excuses in question were not very well crafted.
