Teardrops and Butterflies

(Sequel to The girl in the attic)

Chapter 2

Katie’s POV

The rest of the day passed by quickly and soon we were on our way home. We arrived at the diner and I went upstairs while Preston started work. I felt awful for not helping out by getting a job myself but Preston refused to let me. He said that he didn’t mind working and that I would have a lot of time to work when I finished high school and graduated from college or university. I had no idea what career path I wanted to follow but I was looking forward to making something of myself.

At around seven I went downstairs to see how Preston was doing. I had finished my homework and was starting to feel a bit lonely. Mr. and Mrs. Mac is really nice and didn’t mind me hanging around the diner, as long as I didn’t keep Preston out of his work.

“We’ve got lots of cheese pie left dear, would you like a piece?” Mrs. Mac asked from behind the counter. I didn’t have to consider her offer for long. I was starving and she made the best cheese pie ever.

“Oh, yes please,” I replied, smiling at her. She is a really sweet old lady. She nodded her head and then disappeared into the kitchen. She reappeared shortly with two plates in her hands.  She walked out behind the counter and plopped down on the seat next to me. Mrs. Mac likes talking and telling stories so while I waited for Preston, we ate our cheese pie and she told me about her younger years.

When Preston was finished for the night, he had a piece of cheese pie and then we headed to our little apartment. He sat down at our table and started doing his homework. I could tell that he was tired but he never complained. Whenever I would mention it he would just brush it away like it was nothing and tell me that I was worth it. He really is an amazing guy and he does so much for me. Sometimes I can’t help but feel guilty for not having anything to give back to him.

Preston’s POV

She looked so beautiful as she sat there at the table staring at me. She had a worried look on her face that I knew well. There was nothing I didn’t know about her. Every expression on her face had a different meaning and the one she was wearing now was telling me that she needed some reassuring. I was almost done with my homework so I shut my books and pushed them back into my bag.

“Are you done?” she asked, looking suspicious.

“Almost,” I replied, getting up and walking over to where she was sitting.

“Then why did you stop?” she questioned.

“Because there is something else that I want to do at this moment,” I answered as I pulled her chair back and scooped her up in my arms. A smile tugged at the edge of her lips but I could tell that she wanted to object. She was just about to start saying something so I leaned forward and pressed my lips against hers. When I pulled away the look she had on her face earlier was wiped away and replaced with one of love, want and need.

I carried her into our room and placed her down on the bed. She smiled and me seductively, making my insides go crazy. I just couldn’t get enough of her. I laid down on top of her and kissed her like my life depended on it. Which in actual fact it did, there was no way I could survive without her.

We made love all night until we were both so tired that we couldn’t keep our eyes open. Katie fell asleep in my arms, lying with her head on my chest. I gently stroked he back, wondering how I ever got so lucky. She is perfect in every way and for some reason I couldn’t understand, she loved me.

The next morning we woke up and although I was tired I couldn’t help but feel happy. Waking up to the most beautiful girl in the world made it impossible to feel any other way. I felt like spoiling Katie so instead of waking her, I slipped out of bed and tiptoed out of the room and into the kitchen. I made us pancakes for breakfast since it was her favorite and then sneaked back into the room.

Katie was still sleeping tightly so I placed the tray with food on her bedside table and sat down on the bed next to her. She looked like an angel when she was sleeping and I could honestly just sit there and watch her the whole day but we had to get to school so I leaned forward and started placing little kisses down her neck. She sighed with pleasure as her eyes opened and focused on me.

“Morning handsome,” she whispered as her lips curled up into a cute little smile.

“Morning beautiful,” I replied, running my finger down her check. She blushed slightly and I couldn’t help but feel glad that I still had such an effect on her.

We ate breakfast in bed and then quickly showered and got dressed for school. The day passed just like any other normal school day and soon we were back at home. I had the day off so we took advantage of it by going to the movies. Katie loved romance movies and although they weren’t my favorite I didn’t mind at all. I didn’t pay attention to the movies anyway, I watched her. She really felt all the emotions that the actors were feeling and always wound up crying. I don’t like seeing her sad but she loves those kinds of movies and I get to comfort her which makes me feel a bit better.

The rest of the week passed by and soon it was Friday afternoon. We were at our apartment and Katie was getting really nervous about meeting my parent. They had flown in this morning and we were going to meet them for dinner at a restaurant in town.

“Are you sure this looks ok?” Katie asked for the hundredth time. She had a little frown between her eyes and I had to stop myself from laughing. She looked adorable but the more I told her that, the more unsure she became.

“You look perfect,” I replied, getting up from where I was sitting on the bed watching her. She smiled at me and then turned around to look in the mirror again. I walked up behind her and wrapped my arms around her waist, catching her eyes in the mirror.

“You are absolutely gorgeous, so stop worrying. They are going to love you,” I said honestly.

She turned around in my arms and looked up at me.

“I love you Preston and I just really want them to like me,” she stated. I had no doubt about how much she loves me but I also knew my parents. She had nothing to worry about, they were going to love her.

“I know for a fact that they will like you but if it turns out that they are stupid enough not to, it’s their problem. Nothing they can say or do will ever make me stop loving you,” I said reassuringly. This seemed to have worked because I could see her relax in my arms.

“Ok, let’s go then,” she stated, kissing me on the lips before pulling out of my arms.

We grabbed our coats on the way out and made our way out of the apartment. As we stepped outside the cold night air hit us and I quickly helped Katie slip into her coat before heading to the car. The restaurant wasn’t too far away since we lived at the edge of town. We arrived there in about five minutes and I quickly pulled my car into an open spot in the parking lot. I wanted to get Katie inside the restaurant where it was warm as soon as possible. I know that she is healthy now but I still can’t stop myself from worrying about her.
