My dusty grey laces dragged along the pavement as I ambled home. Hands in pockets, and apple green eyes glued to the familiar grey slabs. I mentally sang along to the song that was bursting through my headphones and occasionally, I glanced up, making sure I didn't bump into a lamp post. Regretfully, it had happened a few more times than I would have liked to admit, and I didn't want another swollen, purple lump on my forehead. Especially, since I would go back to school in a couple of weeks.

My cherry red front door soon emerged from around the corner, and I shoved my hands deeper into the pockets of my over sized hoodie, frantically searching for my keys. Please, don't say I left them at Nora's house. Abruptly, I stopped walking as panic stepped in. Mum said she'd lock me out if I forgot my keys again.

"Relax," I whispered to myself, as I thought of where I might have placed them. Then it clicked. I swiftly shrugged my backpack off, and shook it, relieved to hear the familiar jingling noise. "Ah-hah!" I exclaimed loudly, before quickly checking to see if anyone heard me.

"One day you'll lose your head, Addie!" My best friend's voice echoed through my head. I smiled at the thought of her: Nora Spring. Now, she was a whack job. A couple of screws loose, probably even dropped as a baby a couple of times, but that's what made her so special. Normal was boring and Nora was the epitome of "different".

I was relieved to have finally retrieved my keys from the hell hole called my bag, but even more relieved that I didn't have to walk all the way back to Nora's house to get them. I may have played sports at school, but the summer holiday was for eating, sleeping and internet.

As I got closer to my house, a large white van drove past me and parked outside the house adjacent to us. The "For Sale" sign had been removed. Well, it looked like we have new neighbours. I hurried to my front door, not paying attention to those getting out of the van. After fumbling with my keys for a minute or so, I jammed the key into the lock and hastily turned it open. I leant back on the other side of the door, relieved. Phew, I didn't have to talk to anyone. I didn't like doing that much...

The house was scarily silent. Trudging into the living room, I flung my backpack (decorated with various Marvel and band badges) onto the teal fabric sofa. I then kicked my tattered Vans off, and they fell messily onto the carpet.

"Pick them up, and put them away." My mum's voice rung out.

Shit. Where did she come from?

"I'm upstairs!" I heard her yell again.I slowly picked up my shoes and put them in the cabinet. You could never get past my mum- never. She had eyes at the back of her head, and ears everywhere. It was creepy and unnerving. Terrifying at times. My mum was a protective mama bear.

After, I hauled my backpack up the stairs and entered my room. I collapsed onto the bed and quickly checked if I had any new messages or Tumblr notifications. I sorted through them, and disregarded the spam Nora sent me. She's an idiot. A loveable idiot all the same.

Curious as where my mother actually was, I crept into my parents' room. She was at the windows peaking between the curtains, probably at the new neighbours.

"What do they look like?" I asked her, eyes as sharp as a hawk as she mentally collected her final pieces of data.

"Two boys and one woman- probably their mum- but no sign of their dad. One of the boys looks about ten years old with floppy black hair and blue eyes. The mum shares the same features except for her hair colour. It's brown. Finally, the older boy... Well you should come see for yourself." She remarked strangely, and wiggled her eyebrows suggestively whilst she pulled her mouth into a cheeky grin. I promptly made my way to the window, wondering why I had to see for myself when I... Damn.
