The race of Witches came from a divine family called the Vanir. They originated in the kingdom of Asgard, the highest point of the World Tree, Yggdrasil. There they enjoyed the powers of magic. They lived with another tribe known as the Aesir.

They gave frequent visits to Midgard, the mortal world, in the old days. They were called Gods due to their powers over Nature and their vast knowledge and wisdom. Unfortunately, their powers were limited in the lower world of Midgard than it was in the higher world of Asgard.

War broke out in the once peaceful realm between the two tribes. The King of Asgard went under a spell of madness unleashed by the mystical key that opened the door between worlds, the Serpens Clavum. He banished his opponents, many of which included members of his family, to a limited existence on Midgard. His oldest daughter, Joanna, took the key before closing the door.

The exiled Witches created a code to protect their kind from mortals as their reverence diminished over time. Here on Earth, they practiced their magic and witchcraft in secrecy. There was a time when they could not even practice their powers. Those that were caught in witch hunts would die but due to their divine power, they would be reborn.

Thanks for reading. This is a mix of the tv show and the original novels along with Norse mythology.  The show is pretty good. The book is an interesting read.  The show is available on Hulu if you have it.
