Toel gulped down the berries given to him pretty quickly. The berries were sweet with a hint of sour; it was surprisingly good. He never knew these berries existed, but then again, he barely learned anything at his young age, so he could just be ignorant.
Toei drank the water bottle to wash down the berries. "Is this river water, or...?"
"Don't worry, Toel-sama. The water was taken from the rain, and I boiled it before you woke up." Volkan responded to Toel's question.
"Okay, good, good." Toel finished the water and threw the bottle away. "Where did you get that spear from? Never saw you carry one yesterday."
"This was a treasured weapon of mine that I lost yesterday during my run. I went in search of it this early morning. This was my family heirloom that has been passed down for generations, so I was lucky to find it back again."
Toel made an "oh..." noise before going back to staring at the sky.
"Toel-sama's words yesterday..." Volkan spoke again. "It was very touching. It's a pity that such a good-hearted man like you would have such a tragic life. No family and friends... it must be hard to live like this."
"It is. Do you have a family?" Toel asked.
"Yes, I do. My dad–" Volkan coughed, correcting his informality. "My father took care of me since my mother passed away when she was trying to give birth to me. But yesterday he lost the battles with the humans, and he sacrificed his life so that I could escape."
"Oh... That must have been rough. Sorry about that."
"It is fine, Toel-sama. In order to repay my debt to my father, I need to find my people again and keep everyone safe."
Toel found that not making much sense. "Your people?"
"Yes, as the prince of Blue Tribe Village, I must fulfill my duty to protect all the people in my kingdom." Volkan looked at Toel and smiled weakly. "I... haven't told you that, have I?"
"No! You're a prince?" Toel was shocked by what he had just heard. "As if things weren't weird enough, a prince is serving me? This is messed up..."
"I think there's nothing to worry about. My position does not matter here; as long as I owe you, I will be serving you. It is as simple as that, Toel-sama."
"No, I don't think you get the point..." Toel sighed heavily. "Whatever. What should we do now?"
Volkan began his thought. "Perhaps we should find more resources and food... A few berries wouldn't hold us for long."
Toel nodded. "You're right. I don't think we can find anything in this shithole, we need to venture out..."
Just then, a new unfamiliar voice appeared from afar. "Attention to all citizens, attention to all citizens..." Toel and Volkan looked toward the source of the sound. It was from a speaker on one of the street lamps. Toel was surprised those speakers actually worked. The voice continued. "If any of you are still in town, please gather up at Town Hall. We will provide you with food and a place to stay temporarily. I repeat..." The voice went on by repeating the same sentence.
"Well, I think that's our solution." Toel looked toward the direction of the town hall. It's not in their field of view right now, but the town hall is built near the street they were at. It would only take both of them 5 minutes to arrive. "Come on, let's go." Toel signaled to Volkan so he would follow him. However, Volkan remained in his spot.
"What's the matter?" Toel asked him.
"I don't think... Beasts are welcome there."
Ah balls, Volkan's right. That had completely slipped through Toel's mind. If they see Volkan in their sight, no doubt they will immediately begin attacking without giving them a chance to explain.
