We didn’t even have time to mourn before another throng of zombies came at us, forcing us to continue our escape outside. The courtyard was a nightmare; it seemed as if every student and faculty member was infected, turning them into the undead.
“OK, here’s our game plan: we need to somehow get the security guards weapons, we need something stronger than freaking scissors. Then, we need to get into the cafeteria, the doors are closed when it’s not lunch and the only people in there are the lunch ladies. We can regroup there and gather supplies. Finally we should scout out for a clear exit. Half of us drive so we should split up and take two cars and drive to someone’s house. Hopefully we will be able to find someone who can help us”, I said.
“OK”, they all agree.
Conveniently, we found the mangled bodies of the security guards literally five feet away. We pocketed their guns, their nightsticks, and even a couple of pocketknives. It was a glorious stroke of luck that probably wouldn’t happen to us again. Making our way to the cafeteria, however, wouldn’t be as easy.
The general consensus was that we would probably be safer going back inside and making our way to the cafeteria through the hallway. Yards away from the Promised Land (aka the cafeteria) we heard footsteps behind us. Nothing in the world could ever have prepared me for what was going to happen next. My very best friend in the whole wide world since fifth grade, my soul sister, was behind me; eyes bloodshot and unfocused, mouth snarling and growling, and arms stretched out ready to grab me as if I was a medium rare filet mignon.
“KAYLEE, NO!” I sobbed.
“She’s too far gone, Jess”, Braeden whispered sympathetically.
“Do you want to do it, or should I?” Cayson asked quietly.
“I-I’ll do it. She was my best friend, she would do it for me”, I said. I looked Kaylee in the eyes as she shuffled closer, “I’m so sorry”, I breathed; and then I pulled the trigger. She staggered back, a snarl still etched on her face, and fell to the ground; her visage marred by the bullet hole in the center of her forehead.
“We have to go, we have to stick to the plan”, I said. As I walked away, the only thing I could think about was how much we both hated this place and now one of us had died in it and I might die here too.
Our group didn’t encounter any more zombies on our way to cafeteria, I suppose the man in the sky decided to give us a reprieve considering I just had to kill my best friend. Fortunately, as I suspected, the cafeteria doors were unlocked. Unfortunately, so were the doors to the kitchen. As we slowly made our way to the kitchen doors, weapons at the ready, a clattering of pots and pans quickly alerted us. Immediately our fingers went to the trigger of our stolen guns, like an elite SWAT team, we got in a formation.
The undead lunch ladies stumbled out of the kitchen heading straight towards us. “I’m getting sick and tired of all these freaking zombies”, Cayson said as he proceeded to shoot every single zombie.
“Cayson you’re such a badass”, Braeden commented.
“Thanks. I know”, Cayson responded.
“Do you think we have enough time for me to make some pizza? I’m really craving some right now; this whole zombie apocalypse is interfering with my snack time.” I said.
“I don’t see why not.” Paige answered.
