After making some pizza for us, I said “You know, I’ve never been back here, it’s pretty cool. We could survive back here for months with all this pizza, ice cream, and fruit.”

“That would be seriously unhealthy”, Braeden said.  Then we both laughed because living off pizza is like something out of a beautiful dream. It was nice to laugh and forget about everything that was going on, like how around this time I should be trying not to sleep in Government, or how I had to shoot my best friend/zombie.

Sadly, all good things must come to an end. We packed some chips, fruit and anything else we could salvage in backpacks we found lying in the cafeteria left behind by a student. I struggled with a morality issue of sorts, this kid was probably roaming around eating human flesh right now, but a couple of hours ago he was just a student like us, procrastinating with his math homework.

As we crept out of the back door, I said a quiet goodbye to everyone I knew in this school; the teachers, my friends, janitors, and anyone else I’ve ever crossed paths with. Everyone else in the group had a pensive look on their face; I could only imagine that they were doing something similar. I had always thought the day I said goodbye to everything in this school would be the day I graduated, but now I wondered if that day would ever come.

On first glance, the way to the parking lots was clear. I probably should’ve realized by now that nothing is as easy as it seems. Crouching low to the ground we hid behind a dumpster, watching practically half the student body, zombiefied, congregating around the corner; the only obstacle between us and our way to freedom.

“Dang it”, Paige muttered.

“You can say that again, only with a different word”, Braeden whispered back.

“Well what are we going to do now?” Cayson asked quietly.

“There’s another dumpster a couple of yards away. We can move there and throw something in the opposite direction and see if the zombies fall for the trick, then we can run towards the parking lot”, I stated.

“Alright, let’s go”, Cayson said.

We stealthily tiptoed towards the herd, holding our breath every step of the way. I guess some zombies are smarter than most because one of them turned in our direction and growled loudly, alerting the others of our presence.

“Crap!” I said. Moving closer to us, the zombies started to form a circle around us. “Start firing!” I yelled. Shots sounded from all around me, Cayson and I were able to shoot enough zombies to get a clear path to the other dumpster. “Let’s go!” I shouted.

The others followed Cayson and I to the other dumpster, we were able to sneak away without catching the zombies attention. Huddled behind the dumpster, we sat down trying to catch our breath.
