The last thing I tell her is, 'I love you. Be brave, Tris.'
Why did she do that in the first place? Caleb was such a coward towards her, and she sacrificed her life for him? She would've never gotten into this mess.
After I wonder about Caleb for awhile, a doctor, one of Tris' doctors, shakes me from my daze. I notice I have bitten my nail beds raw.
"Hello. You must be Tobias Eaton. My name is Dr. Christopher Stan, and I've been taking care of Tris."
My muscles tense at her name. As soon as he speaks, millions of questions flood my mind. But only one sticks. "How is she?", I ask, immediately wishing my voice hadn't cracked.
"We believe she is in critical condition, but has a 75% chance of waking up. See, the bullet went through her lung. It was a measly 5 centimeters from her airway, which would've killed her instantly. But it didn't, which is why she will most likely survive this. It has come to my attention that she has cheated death many times before. But this time, it was pure luck. It has also come to my attention that you two are a couple. She is stable enough for you to see her, if you like. Room 156c. Press the red button over the nightstand if you need me. Good luck."
As soon as he is done informing me, I practically sprint to her room.
I don't usually cry, but I think I sob as soon as my eyes hit her lifeless body. I immediately kneel down at her bedside.
"Tris, my love, please wake up. I know it might be hard for you to come back. I know you might not want to come back. You might just want to escape the war, to escape the living hell that is our world, but please. Please, come back, wake up. I'll be here. I promise. I'll never let you go..."
As I pull away, I hear a muffled groan.
It may be muffled but I can hear it clearly."T-Tobias?"
Tris?
Tris!
"Oh my God, Tris! You're awake!"
"Where am I, Tobias?"
"In the hospital. David shot you, and you were bleeding out in the Weapons Lab. I found you after a while, but, I was almost too late."
"You saved m-me?"
"Yes, Tris, I did."
"I love you! I love you so, so much, Tobias!"After I tell the nurses and the doctors, they run quick tests and exams on her to make sure she's clear to go home. Once all the tests are checked out, we head home. As soon as I reach my apartment in Dauntless, I carry her to my bed and set her down, careful to not irritate any existing wounds. We kiss and it feels so familiar, like we have each other memorized. All I can think is how much I missed her the day she was out. 'What would I do without you Tris?', I think to myself, and we fall asleep in each other's arms. I will never ever let anyone else touch her again. I can't lose her again.
I, Tobias Eaton, now solemnly swear for the rest of my life, to never let anyone else hurt Beatrice Prior.
The last words I say are, 'I love you, Tris Prior.', before sleep swallows me whole.
