Friendship

Visiting day was always hectic. At least that was what she was told. If her own last year taught her anything, it was to stay as far away as possible. Myla was thankful for the offer to escape for a short while.

"Rise and shine!".

"How the hell did you manage to get into my room?".

"A magician never reveals their tricks" Sky announced as she flopped down onto the sofa. She had a habit of breaking into places she shouldn't be. Myla was just thankful she was dressed.

"Where are we going?" Myla asked, sitting down next to her to tie up her shoes.

"Ah, ah, ah. You'll ruin the surprise!" Sky mocked.

"Are you going to be this obnoxious all day?".

"Do you expect anything less?".

Myla's friends had neglected to tell her what they were doing today. They'd informed her that Sky would be collecting her at midday (she hadn't expected her to break into her room) and then she'll take her to wherever they were going. Not that they could go particularly far. They would need permission to do that.

As soon as her shoes were tied, Sky grabbed her arm and dragged her out of the room. She was surprisingly strong for such a small girl. Myla just accepted her fate as, yet another person pulled her along. Why wouldn't anyone just let her walk normally?

Wherever they were going, they were obviously avoiding the Pit. That was where the visits were happening. They walked through corridor after corridor, across the chasm bridge and upwards. Finally, they reached a flight of stairs and Myla knew where they were going. The roof.

As she walked out the door, she shielded her eyes. The sun was bright and reflecting off the surrounding buildings. Not a single cloud was in the sky and there was a very light breeze. It was the same roof they jumped from at the start of their initiation. Up here she could see how big the city was. Large skyscrapers loomed above, the train track winding through the streets and the small squares of greenery. It was beautiful.

"You finally made it!" Felix's called. She turned in the direction of his voice.

Myla almost burst out laughing. Felix and Griffin were sat on a blanket, various foods spread in front of them wrapped in napkins of placed in boxes. They both were grinning up at her.

A picnic. On the roof. Not what she was expecting.

"What's all this for?" Myla asked, taking a seat on the blanket. She was careful to not squash anything.

"We haven't done anything together in months. We've been going back and forth to the fence, and you've been busy with your secret security stuff" Felix explained. "May as well make the most of our two weeks off".

"Plus, it's been a year since we so graciously offered you our friendship" Sky dramatically declared. Myla had forgotten about that.

As the only initiate from her Faction, Myla was the odd one out from the start. She didn't help the situation by completely closing herself off from everyone else. Why should she get attached to anyone if there was a chance, they wouldn't make it? It wasn't until the end of the first stage when the tree basically forced her into becoming their friend. They wouldn't leave her alone until she did.

Myla was thankful that they did. They helped her a lot. It couldn't have been easy to deal with her. Trust issues had affected the way she saw the world. But they were like the sun breaking through the clouds and helped her to become the woman she was today.
