"— Diffuse axonal injury— common in car accidents— intensive rehabilitation will be need—"

Tears sting my eyelids, sadness threatening to spill over. My bottom lip was trembling so badly that I couldn't talk to the doctor. I stayed at the hospital all night sitting in those god-awful chairs in the waiting room.

Victoria had woken me up, telling me I could come in the room with her as the doctor needed to speak to us. This felt like some sort of fever dream... Valencia lay on the cot in the worst shape possible and I couldn't do a thing — she needed a damn ventilator to breathe and I was fine, why couldn't I do anything to help?

I cleared my throat, pushing back every single emotion that I was feeling right now, "W-will she be okay? She'll wake up, right?"

He inhaled deeply, giving me a sorry excuse for a smile. "I'm sorry but I can't say for certain."

I scoffed, rubbing under my nose with my finger — I has to distract my hand from punching something. "Sorry isn't good enough." I snapped, "Do you know the— the number of things this girl hasn't got to do in life? The amazing person she was growing to be? You better do everything in your fucking power to b-bring her back to me."

Tears rolled down my cheek and my vision blurred. I let the tears come, it's not like the doctor hadn't seen every emotion in the book before. Hospitals were an unpleasant place, filled with unpleasant circumstances.

"I can assure you, the hospital staff and I are doing everything we can to help Ms.Solace." The doctor told us, "Do either of you have any questions before I leave?"

I didn't say a word as I stated the wall behind him. Victoria shook her head no and thanked him.

"I-I'm going to go get us drinks, any requests?" Victoria asked me and I didn't say a word again. There was no energy, instead, I went to where Valencia lay and watched her. The way her chest rose and fell lightly — at least I could see she was still here with me.

My finger traced lightly over hers, she was so cold. Her skin looked even paler than normal — her cheeks! The usual rosiness to them was gone. "Valencia, darling, come back to me," I whispered to her.

Nothing.

Was I expecting a response? Of course not. She had only been in the hospital for 16 hours at that point. Valencia's mother was out of the country on vacation and was trying her best to get to her youngest daughter as soon as possible. I didn't speak to Victoria — we spent the day in silence... waiting.

It was growing dark out, I had fallen asleep although I didn't know that until I was jolted out of my sleep with a shake.

"Sorry I didn't mean to startle you." Victoria apologized when she saw me flinch.

"It's fine," I told her, sitting up straight in my seat. "Did the doctor say something else?"

"No, I just...." She trailed off, chewing on her bottom lip. "I think you should go home for a bit... get some proper rest."

"Are you mental?" I asked her honestly. She shook her head no. I know there were ways of saying this in a nicer way but fuck I was so tired, stressed, and sick to my stomach. "I'm not leaving this damn hospital until I am bringing Valencia home with me."

Victoria took a seat beside me. "We don't know when she'll be okay Draco, I'll call you if anything—"

"No."

"What would Valencia have told you? Hmm?" She actually smiled at her own question, the first positive expression either of us had on since we got here — in this sterile-smelling hell hole.
