Tonight was perfectly planned out. "This is for you," Ercole walked behind a desk and pulled out a small silver case ingrained with his initials. His golden rings that decorated his fingers scraped against the lid making a sound reminiscent of a knife sharpening. Ercole's hand rested on top of it protectively, "it's mine, so don't ruin it," he warned Luca with a bastardly smile. Luca tightened his face and narrowed his eyes in understanding. Inside the box was a black gun with custom-fitted plush velvet cushioning around it. Luca reached out to grab the gun but paused in hesitation. Ercole raised his eyebrow and barked, "take it." Luca followed his command and took the gun with him and put it away. Ercole knew that Luca was competent, he trusted him as his right-hand man, but tonight Luca seemed different. Luca started to head out of the room when he felt Ercole's heavy hand grip his shoulder. "Luca," Ercole said softly as he bent over Luca's ear, "don't forget what happens if you fail tonight." A cold shudder spread throughout Luca's body when Ercole let go of him. Luca looked over his shoulder to him and confidently said, "I won't," before grabbing his jacket and leaving the room.
Luca walked into the dark alleys of the town and made his way to the meeting place. He repeated Ercole's words over and over again in his head with the weight of the gun pressed against his body. He watched his feet walking and visualized the plan, focusing hard on the details. His train of thought was broken by a rich and familiar voice. "Luca," he looked up and saw his target; Alberto Scorfano, age 22, a tall and lean golden brown man with short and thick brown coils of hair slicked up like a pompadour, "how pretentious," Luca thought to himself when he first saw Alberto, but now noticed how handsome it made his features. "You should watch where you're going, especially at night. You never know what kind of people could be watching you," Alberto warned Luca while playfully wiggling his fingers at him. Luca smiled at him with thoughtful eyes and said "yeah, you're right." Luca looked around the empty streets, "are you ready to go, " he asked Alberto. Alberto blushed, "yeah, but I wanted to give you this first," he reached into his pocket behind him and pulled out a single red rose, and held it out, "this is for you." Luca looked at the flower and then back at Alberto, "thank you," Luca said as he took the flower with a smile from him, "it's beautiful."
"C'mon," Alberto said to Luca with a wide smile as he grabbed his hand, "I have the whole night planned out," He said with a smirk. Me too, Luca thought somberly. Alberto held Luca's hand with intention, he ran his thumb on the back of it and playfully squeezed it when pointing at different things around the town. "Oh! I want to show you something," Alberto excitedly told Luca and tighten his grip as they ran to the end of the harbor. "You see that little island over there," he pointed out into the sea, "I used to live there," Alberto explained. Luca squinted his eyes into the infinite night sky and could make out a faint silhouette distinct from the surrounding water. "Oh really?" Luca genuinely asked Alberto, this wasn't in his Intel at all. "Yeah, just me and my dad," Alberto finished. Luca had a thoughtful look on his face, he wondered what else wasn't reported about his target. Alberto thought he upset Luca and quickly changed the subject. "Hey, let's get some gelato," Alberto squeeze his hand again and headed back towards the plaza. "What's your favorite flavor?" Alberto asked Luca. "Oh, I like them all really, I guess I prefer sweet flavors though," Luca responded. "Perfect!" Alberto said to him as they reached the shop, "sit here and I'll be back with our cones," Alberto pulled out a chair and sat Luca on it before heading inside the store. Luca sat on the cold chair and looked up at the bright stars. He fiddled with the petals of the rose with his fingers and listened to the sounds of the night. He could hear gentle waves slipping in and out of the harbor, the flickering of light above him, and Alberto talking to the worker inside the store. Luca tried to focus on the objective of tonight but couldn't stop thinking about how Alberto held his hand throughout the night. He played back the days he spent with Alberto before tonight and how close they have gotten. He found himself often thinking how things would be different if he wasn't working with Ercole. He snapped out of his thoughts when he heard the bell above the door ring. Alberto popped out with two cones of gelato in his hands, "surprise!" Luca stood up and Alberto handed him a cone with a red ball of gelato on top, "guess what flavor it is," Alberto said to Luca. Luca gave it a lick and his pupils widened, "wow". He never had this flavor before, but this was his new favorite. "It's good isn't it," Alberto asked excitedly. "it is, but what flavor is this?" Luca asked with a curious face. Alberto smirked cockily, "it's a secret flavor" he responded. Luca looked behind Alberto at a street clock, he hadn't realized how late it was and saw he was running out of time.
"Hey, I'm getting a little cold," Luca said to Alberto softly. "My place is close by, we can finish our gelato in there."
