CHAPTER 2: Secrets

POV Tucker

I have a secret.

And not the fun kind.

Yesterday, I could tell that Luna knew something was off, but I didn't know what to do about it. How long will it take before she finds out?

"Luna, hey!" It was passing time, the first day of classes back. I had spent all morning going to some of my tougher classes, things like AP Calc, AP Bio, and AP Italian. Because of that, I hadn't seen Luna all day. She's more into creative classes like studio art and writing. She's kinda wicked talented.

I went to a school called The Fortress because quite frankly, it is one. It's a historical landmark used during the war back in the day. For some reason, our community decided that it would be a good idea to make it into a private school.

I don't mind, I normally think it's kind of cool when I pass by old canons and knocked down brick walls. However, with the fact that it was senior year, and I had the world's craziest secret...I didn't think it necessary to stop and smell the roses today so to speak. Although, my sense of smell is getting a lot better.

Luna looked flustered as she headed over toward her locker and began to open it. The contemporary lockers looked out of place as they contrasted the medieval-like walls behind them.

"Did something happen?"

"Shannon..."

That's all I needed to hear. Shannon was one of Luna's ex best-friends. In middle school, they used to be really tight, but for some reason when we got to high school they stopped talking. However, Luna won't tell me why they split, something about Shannon being a pathological liar? I don't know, I stay out of the drama. Besides, once Luna needed to find new friends, she found me.

"What's the situation?"

Luna went up to the mirror in her locker door and shifted her new bangs around with her right hand. Those were new; she cut them recently. I could see her soft brown eyes through the reflection in the mirror as her back was facing toward me.

"You're gonna think I'm lying."

"No, I won't."

I gulped.

Luna finally turned around toward me and her eyes met mine. For the first time, I realized how similar our heights were. Sometimes I forgot that my growth spurt only lasted so long...well, for now.

"She warned me...about you."

"About me?" This is not good. This is not good at all. Does Shannon know something...about me?

"Said you had changed over break, and that you aren't the same uhh person that you once were."

"Well, we all changed over break. You cut your hair," I motioned to her head. "I forgot to tell you yesterday but I really like them."

"Uhh thanks," she forced a small smile. I wish I didn't say that. Things with Luna have always been weird between us, constantly toying the line between flirty and friendship. But whenever one of us gets closer, the other one always steps back.

The bell rang. Thank the gods.

Luna grabbed her textbooks and started to walk toward her classroom which was in an old bunker (school is a Fortress, remember?).

"Is there anything else?" I asked, not wanting to hear the answer.

She looked anxiously down at her right bracelet, the one that her mom gave her before she passed. A habit she had developed for when she was thinking.

"No that's it," is all she said before she turned and walked away.

This wasn't good. No, this wasn't good at all. What if Shannon knew my secret...or worse. What if Luna knew? What is she not telling me?

I didn't want to admit it to myself, but I felt like my best friend was hiding something.
