stevie woke up with a warm and comfortable feeling, she loved being back home. she looked around to find jem doing yoga on the floor beside her bed. she giggled softly at her sister and grabbed her phone off her nightstand.

"don't laugh!" she shook her head.

"tommy liked my post" stevie just shook her head, changing the subject.

"why wouldn't he" jem sighed, raising an eyebrow.

"i dunno, things were really awkward yesterday"

"what? with who?" penelope poked her head through the door.

"no one—"

"tom simons" jem intervened.

"what?! he was lovely yesterday, it wasn't awkward at all!"

"correction, it wasn't awkward with you—he literally loves you" she puffed her cheeks out.

"well you're not gonna like what's happening tonight" she raised her eyebrows, teasing the girl.

"oooh, i think i feel an old tradition coming on" jem giggled along with her mother.

"please tell me you're kidding" stevie felt her stomach drop.

"nope! it's a christmas tradition for the simons to come help decorate the tree" she smirked.

"yeah like seven years ago" she fought, not knowing if she could even handle this tonight.

"oh come on steph, you'll have fun, before you know it you two'll be back to normal"

"i beg to differ" she fell back onto her bed.

"don't be a drama queen, they'll be here at four, maybe clean up a little.. i don't know how this place already looks like a pig sty"

"it's all her, you should know this by now"

stevie scoffed, throwing a pair of jemimah's patterned socks, hitting her square in the face, evoking a soft chuckle from their mum as she shook her head, leaving the girls to clean.

"tom!" the blonde boy's mother entered his office abruptly

"mm?" he mumbled, not bothering to take his eyes off the screen, as he continued to edit, this time helping tubbo with a short project.

"does that white polo still fit?"

"i think so, why?" he furrowed his eyebrows.

"we're going to the weissman's for dinner and to help decorate the tree, didn't dad mention it?"

"no what? i'm busy! plus we haven't done stuff like that in years" he reasoned.

"exactly why it'll be nice to spend some time with them after all this time! i thought you'd be a little more excited to catch up with stevie"

"stephanie has changed—i don't think we'd make very good friends anymore" he shrugged.

"that's nonsense! you two are the whole reason this tradition exists" she raised her eyebrows at the boy.

"i know that,, i just think things'll be different now"

"stop winging, she was your best friend for crying out loud, just treat her like you would eryn, or toby and everything'll be fine"

"alright, mum" he gave in.

"mmhm" she narrowed her eyes, knowing she'd won the argument, and leaving satisfied with that fact.

"steph! look how tall you are!" chris simons exclaimed as he entered the weissman home, cradling a few boxes of christmas ornaments.

stephanie smiled bashfully, waiting for the man to set the box down so she could hug him. behind them belle simons and penelope weissman let out soft squeals, hugging each other tightly. they had stayed in contact over the years, but obviously not as much as they would've liked to. they fell straight back into how they used to be, gossiping about anything and everything, just happy to be in each other's company again.

"you were so right about this hairdresser!" belle's eyes widened as she reached out to touch her best friend's hair, "she cannot do layers to save her life!"

"i know! we'll need to go to the salon soon! you can finally take me to get my hair done in a decent place" penelope begged the blonde, as they continued to gossip.

"tom my boy!" vince emerged from the kitchen, his mouth full with a rice paper roll his wife told him not to eat as he held his hand out to shake tommy's.

"hey vince," the simons boy smiled brightly ignoring the older man's handshake request and going in for a hug.

steph couldn't help but smile at the exchange, as she stood back and took a deep breath in. for the first time in 7 years. it smelt like christmas again.

before they knew it the families had finished putting up their tree, and now were singing christmas songs awfully as the grandparents cooked. tommy and stevie stayed as far away as humanly possible from each other, worrying jemimah. she smirked devilishly as she queued a song she hoped would bring the two together. jem grabbed her younger sister's hand and pulled her into a clearing in the room as last christmas by wham played on the speaker.

"you know i'm a sucker for this damn song" steph sighed, with a nostalgic look on her face as her older sister twirled her. she closed her eyes and thought about how years ago they would dance around the living room to this same song.

tommy watched as the brunette danced around with her sister, humming along quietly to the song.

"get over here tommy!" jem encouraged, causing stevie's eyes to open abruptly.

"oh no, i don't dance." tommy forced a smile, awkwardly rubbing his shoulders.

"your loss" she teased, mentally cursing whilst the youngest weissman mentally rejoiced. but she ran the words over in her head. really? 'i don't dance', was the best he could come up with?

they danced a little longer, eventually roping their mother and belle to join in, and everything felt the same as it did, all those years ago. well, almost the same.
