Days passed, and again, I had to adapt to a new routine, and way of life.
Gone were the days of lazy mornings and epic sunrises. Gone were the days of fishing for hours or hunting deer. Gone were the days of laying in bed with Loki without a care in the world.
I worked for Adrien now, and I lived at the mercy of The Warbonnet.
Adrian approached me yesterday and asked about the incident between me and the crew member that got fresh with me. I told him not to worry about me, and that I could handle my own, to which he shook his head in understanding and dropped the matter completely.
Steve heard about what happened, probably via word of Bogdan. He approached me as soon as he got back to the bunk room and consoled me, saying, "No woman should have to deal with harassment like that. I'm so sorry."
I did something then, something that I never expected to do. I stood up from my bunk, wrapped my arms around Steve, and started crying.
It was at that moment that I placed down the emotional armor I so tightly cling to. I was tired of being invincible. I was tired of pretending that I didn't miss my husband.
He didn't say anything at first, he just held me while I sniveled. I was the one that broke the silence. "I'm so tired."
He answered. "I know. We only have a couple more days till we make for Russia. Can you hang on till then?" I nodded a 'yes' against his chest and left it at that.
Steve was nowhere near as close a to me as Loki is, but he was there when I needed him, and I'd say that despite our differences, he was becoming a friend.
And I needed a friend.
"So did Bogdan tell you that or did Adrian?" I asked, referring to what Steve said about having a couple days left.
"Adrian. He said he was working out the details of getting us to shore." He said as I pulled away and sat back on the bed.
"Okay, okay that's good. We don't have time to waste." I responded, wiping away what remained of my emotional episode and sitting back down on the squeaky mattress. "Did he give you any details?"
"No. Just that it would happen soon."
And happen soon it did.
At about two o'clock in the morning we were awakened by a faint knock on our door. Steve shot straight up and I bolted to the door, bracing myself for whatever may happen, and when I opened it, I was met by Captain Adrian himself.
"Good morning." He whispered in his hushed gravely voice. "Get ready to go. You're getting into Russia tonight."
"Yes sir." I responded obediently. He nodded and turned to walk away when he said something that it seemed like he had almost forgotten to say.
"Meet me on the main deck as soon as you can. And put your wet suit on. The water'll be cold."
"Okay." I responded and I closed the door. I turned back to see Steve bent over fishing for his shield case under the bed. He pulled it out just as I started reaching for my duffle bag and soon enough we were headed towards the lockers to put our wet suits on.
The deck air was cold on our faces, as usual, and everything was wet. There wasn't a soul to be seen under the dark cloudy sky this morning. The crew hadn't started working for the day yet.
I looked around for Bogdan, and quickly found him over by the platform that acted like a dump truck and dropped the crab pots into the Sea. Beside him was a black inflatable raft, which I thought at first was an odd color, but then realized it was probably for stealth.
