MINE
"I never thought that I would need someone so much."
The words slipped out of Jennie's mouth before she could even think it through. Internally, she was screaming at herself. Not here, this isn't where I wanted to do it. But it was too late. When you smiled at her from across the table, eyes sparkling and cheeks a subtle pink, she knew she didn't stand a chance. Especially not when the adoration in your eyes still made her heart pound even after years of dating.
"Baby, everything alright?" You asked, leaning forward to press the back of your hand to her forehead.
Your girlfriend took your hand away from her face, kissing it, before smiling fondly at you. "I'm fine. Great, actually." You stared at her, a little confused, but merely watched as she downed the remainder of her wine.
"Would you ladies like any dessert?" The waiter's sudden interruption startled you, a subtle reminder that you were in public, not in the comfort and privacy of your hotel room. "Our Panna Cotta is to die for."
"We'll take one please," you ordered, a wide grin sliding across your face. When he left, you turned your attention back to the beautiful girl in front of you. "Remember the Panna Cotta you had on our Italy trip? It was so good, I wonder how this one will taste."
Jennie smiled softly, but you knew something was off. Your girlfriend was looking at you with dazed eyes. Her fingers fiddled with her bracelet, a sure tell sign that something was on her mind. When one of her hands slipped down to press against her stomach, you immediately called your waiter over.
"I'm sorry, we've changed our minds. Can we get the dessert to go and the check as soon as possible?"
"Baby, I'm-"
"A terrible liar," you interrupted.
The brown takeout bag and check were placed in front of you, but Jennie swept it away before you even had a chance to peek at it. "Perks of dating a millionaire," she joked, handing her black card to the waiter. You rolled your eyes but murmured a "thank you." To which she sent you a wink in response. When the transaction was done, you sprung out of your seat and grabbed your girlfriend's hand. You refused to let go until you reached the car, not that Jennie was going to object.
"Tom, can you take us back to the hotel?" You asked the driver, who merely nodded and started the ignition.
Jennie leaned back into her seat, clutching her purse to her stomach. Her entire body was stiff, and she kept her gaze straight ahead. "Did the food not agree with you?" You whispered. She shook her head, lips not even parting. You sighed, frowning. With her busy schedule, Jennie was almost always fighting off colds and stomach bugs, but it still hurt to see her in pain.
The ride to the hotel felt excruciatingly long, and you nearly flung yourself out of the car when it came to a stop. But a hand at your wrist stopped you from going very far. Your girlfriend gave you a soft smile and tilted her head towards the park.
"How does a walk sound?"
"But the dessert," you trailed off, as Tom silently took the leftovers from you. "Will it calm your stomach?"
Jennie nodded, and you immediately agreed. Wordlessly, her hand slipped into yours as she led the way. The street lights weren't very bright, but your eyes adjusted to the darkness rather quickly. Under normal circumstances, being in a park near midnight would have scared the living out of you, but other couples were walking around, and Jennie seemed to be rather confident in where she was going.
"You're the best thing that's ever happened to me," Jennie's sudden confession caught you off guard.
You ducked your head to the side to hide your flushed cheeks. "So mushy," you mumbled. She chuckled in response and gave your hand a squeeze, making you look at her.
"I mean it. I don't know where I'd be without you," she insisted, words laced with sincerity.
"Oh please," you chuckled. "You'd still be Jennie Kim, international superstar."
Jennie came to an immediate halt, catching you off guard once again. She turned to you, gaze serious. Her free hand came up to cup your cheek, and she ran her thumb over the corner of your lip.
"But then I wouldn't be your girlfriend."
You gave her shoulder a gentle shove, turning around to once again hide your blush. But when you did, you were shocked at what you saw. You must have been so focused on your girlfriend's cheesy statements that you didn't notice how she was purposefully guiding you away from the crowd, shielding your view from the incredible decorations. The trees were covered with dainty lights, your favorite color illuminating the forest, and if you squinted, you could make out the silhouette of a photographer. When you turned back, tears immediately clouded your view.
Your girlfriend was down on one knee, an open box in her hand. "I have been in love with you since the moment we met. You make me a better person, and my life would mean nothing if it didn't have you. Will you marry me?"
"Yes," you whispered. "It would be an honor to be your wife, Jennie Kim."
With that, she slipped the engagement ring onto your finger. You pulled her to her feet and immediately smashed your lips against hers. Jennie pulled away first, clasping your hand tightly in hers.
"I'm really happy right now," she chuckled, a lopsided grin spreading across her cheeks. "You have no idea how nervous I was."
"Oh, I'm pretty sure I knew."
