I wrapped up another week at my office during that first full week of July. I ended up going into work the second week I moved in with Rob, realizing that the kids were fine, and I was bored. We had been living together now for almost two weeks. My birthday was two days ago but Rob had to work a 12 hour shift. So I spent my birthday night with Allie and the kids to keep just be with them for a quiet celebration, just the four of us. But I did miss spending the day with Rob.

Now 41, I was still super fit and ripped, thanks to Rob's dedication to his physique. We ate healthy, worked out regularly, and had sex like rabbits. Everything kept us looking good and feeling young. We looked like quite the couple now. And as I drove home, I couldn't wait to spend another full weekend with him.

Rob had the weekend off so I was expecting he was up to something.

So when my phone rang around 5 as I was driving home, I thought it was Rob, checking in. I didn't even look at the screen, just answered with a sexy "Hello."

There was a slight pause, and then a clearing of a throat before I heard that familiar voice come through my car speaker. "Hey Brian. I wasn't sure if you would answer."

I froze in my seat, my hands gripping the steering wheel tight as I held my breath.

"Darren?" I breathed out cautiously.

"Yeah. It's me. How are you?" His voice sounded different, but the same. I heard him clear his throat again, and he gave a small little chuckle. Those telltale signs that it was really him flooded my senses. I staggered a bit, and moved to the nearest chair and sat down, my mouth hanging open. I didn't know what to say, and my heart was suddenly pumping in my chest. I hadn't spoken to him in almost two years.

"I'm fine." I finally said, hearing the edge to my own voice. I swallowed hard, unsure of what to say next, twisting my hands around the wheel as I moved to the right lane.

"Good." I heard his voice say into my ear. There was a brief pause before I heard him continue. "I hope you are. Been thinking about you...." His voice trailed off and he cleared his throat again. When I didn't say anything, he continued. "I'm sorry. Maybe I should've just texted you first, but then I thought what the hell. Are you in the car?" I heard him swallow as I listened to my own breathing coming out of my mouth.

"Why are you calling?" I suddenly asked, finding my voice. I tried to be strong, but I heard the weakness in my words as it came out.

He sighed. "Well, I know it was your birthday..."

"Don't." I heard myself say firmly. "Just....don't."

There was silence on the other end, and I could hear him trying to breathe normally. When we were in Vegas just a couple years ago, Darren promised me we would go back for one of my birthdays and have another wild weekend together. But that was before he up and left me.

"Brian...I'm just...so sorry..." I heard his voice crack. I pictured him in my head as I remembered him on that last day I saw him. His sad blue eyes. His lips pressed together tightly. His hands in his pockets. His big shoulders slumped down. That handsome face looking so defeated.

I waited, clutching the wheel so tightly it hurt. "Why are you calling now?" My courage was returning slowly, and I was regaining my senses. "I haven't heard a word from you in over a year Darren. Why now?"

I heard him clear his throat again and I could picture him pursing his lips and licking them in order to talk. "I heard."

"Heard what?" My heart was pounding in my chest, waiting to hear what he actually knew.

"About you and Allie. And about you." He said quickly back.

"So now you call?"
