I was getting ready to pack up the next day at the office when my phone vibrated again. It was Rob. Just like yesterday, I thought to myself. I looked at my phone and let out a small snort.
Stay put. I'm coming to your office. Rob texted.
I quickly typed back Everything okay?
Everything is GREAT. See you in a bit. Was all he said back.
I looked at my watch. 5:10pm. On a Friday. Everyone was practically gone already, so I would need to meet him at the side door to let him in.
Let me know when you are here and I'll meet you at the side door. I texted back.
He responded with a "K" and a smiley face. Followed by another smiley face. Followed by the eggplant symbol, which made me burst out laughing. At least he was trying to be young and hip.
I had told Allie about the place Rob found, and she cried. It was happening too fast, and she didn't want me to leave. We weren't telling the kids anything just yet, and I reassured her that we hadn't even gotten the place yet, just put in an offer. But the reality was sinking in for both of us. This was happening.
At 5:30pm Rob texted me that they were here. They? I thought but headed to the door anyway, wondering if this was good news.
I saw the police car first, and then noticed Rob walking to the front door in his uniform again today, followed by his real estate agent Anita carrying her large bag.
I wondered if this was good news.
I opened the door and Rob beamed at me. "You ready to sign?" He simply said.
My eyes flicked to Anita who was also smiling widely as Rob came right up to me and hugged me in a huge bear hug, lifting me off the ground. "They accepted our offer!"
Anita stood by and watched him put me down and held me in his hands. "Seriously?" I said, feeling lightheaded.
He nodded, but Anita stepped in. "We're here to sign the papers if you're ready."
"I thought this was the easiest place to meet and do it, if you don't mind." Rob asked with wide eyes.
I nodded and ushered them in. Two of my colleagues were heading out as I walked back towards my office, giving me a good night as they looked back at the large police officer walking in behind me and the business looking woman. I'm sure there would be talk next week about something. I probably looked like I was under arrest and Anita was my lawyer.
Anita pulled out papers in my office and sat down at the table while Rob simply beamed at me, smiling wider than I had ever seen him smile, mouthing "I love you" every time I looked his way. I was moving slowly, feeling like this wasn't really happening. I was still thinking about Allie crying last night, and what this would mean for my kids. And Darren. How he had crept into my head again.
Anita walked us through the process, reviewing the agreement, and telling us where to sign. Both our names were on the offer, and both our names were therefore going to be on the agreement. I learned my lesson from the last time I had lived with someone, and wanted to make sure my name was on this place.
I watched Rob in his uniform, looking all serious as he read over the papers, using his glasses from his pocket. His face stern and serious. But when his eyes met mine, he lit up like a boy. And his big lips spread wide in a smile that was meant only for me. His big brown eyes seemed to sparkle as he held the pen in his big fingers and scribbled his signature on pages, before they were passed to me and I added my own neater stamp beside his name. I studied my name, all neat and readable. Rob's was almost unreadable, a big clear R followed by a masculine scrawl afterwards. Even his signature was manly.
