“I think I’m going to do it Kylie. I’m going to book my flight tonight,” I finally said. We were sitting on a bench right outside in the courtyard of our school. The hot sun was burning right through the clouds upon the two of us. My legs
“Amy, I respect your decisions and believe in you, but don’t you think this is a little much?” Kylie replies.
“You know exactly how my parents have been treating me. I can’t take this anymore, I just need something to prove to them that I can do this.” I say. Kylie had a worried look on her face, and it’s weird because she’s that carefree girl that constantly smiles. Something must be up. She hadn’t really been herself lately. “Kylie, is there something going on?”
(A.N. We’re gonna switch points of view here! whooooo)
Kylie’s POV
I stare at Amy as she told me that she’s leaving. I can’t have her leave now when I made a really stupid mistake. I really shouldn’t have done it, but I did and now I can’t change it.
“Kylie, is there something going on?” she asked. This it Kylie, you’re going to have to say it. I shut my eyes for a bit and take a deep breath.
“Amy… I’m pregnant.” There, I finally said it. It’s out, no turning back now.
“What?” Amy asked. I can tell she was completely confused. “I don’t understand… how? Why? What?”
“Amy, I really wanted to tell you, but you seemed to have a lot on your plate and I didn’t want to…” I started rambling.
“No. No, gosh I’m such an idiot. I shouldn’t have vented and constantly talked to you about my problems. We’re best friends, we can tell each other anything. I’m so sorry Kylie.” She interrupted. I couldn’t say anything. My eyes started watering up, I didn’t know what to do. “Look, you don’t need to tell me anything right now if you’re not ready which means who the father is and the story behind all this.” she said right before she hugged me. “I should’ve been there for you.”
The tears were already streaming down my face. My parents wouldn’t have been proud of me at all. I don’t know how to explain this to my aunt. I let go of the hug. “Amy, you need to know what happened…” She nodded and remained silent.
“Remember Homecoming last month? It was the night your parents wouldn’t let you out after that, what was it? Oh yeah, because you got a B on that History test. Gosh, I really don’t understand your parents. Well, for the past few months, I’ve had Mr. Langham tutor me with math after school. I’m struggling a bit here, and my grades aren’t looking the brightest. At first, it was pretty awkward having him teach me privately after school. Anyways, as the days went by, it started to get a lot more comfortable and better at math. About two months ago, he started to get closer, touching me. I shrugged it off at first and thought it was nothing, but then it got so much more intimate and I got scared. I didn’t know what to do, and I wanted to tell you about it, but I wasn’t sure how to. The day of homecoming, after school, I told him thanks for the help, but now I can do it on my own. I was basically trying to quit these after school sessions with him. He didn’t take it very well…” My started cringing at the memory. “He was yelling at me and then he grabbed my shirt threatening me that he’ll destroy me. I got out of his grip as fast as I could and ran away. I stayed in my room crying for hours not knowing what to do. I thought that maybe Homecoming would cheer me up so I got ready for it and went. What I didn’t expect was for him to be there. I thought he was taking off for the night.” I paused then, not so sure if I should continue. Amy grabbed my hand assuring me that it’s okay to tell her. “That night, he raped me,” I said with a shaky breath. “I only found out two days ago that I was pregnant.”
Back to Amy’s POV
The words coming out of Kylie’s mouth were unbelievable. I see her hazel eyes soon grow tears. She looked down, ashamed of what I think of her. I didn’t know what to say that could make this any better and so I hugged her, trying my best to soothe her.
“I should’ve been there for you, I’m so sorry.” I said while crying. The tears were streaming down both our faces. We remained like that for awhile. It felt like we were the only people here. The noise coming from the cars, birds, wind brushing past the tree became silent. I couldn’t believe what I just heard from Kylie. Through her eyes, she thinks of shame, but in mine, I see courage. While I was riled up in my mother, my drama teacher, Connor that I didn’t bother to ask how she’s been. If anything, I’m the one who feels ashamed.
Once we let go of the hug once again I asked nervously, “Kylie… what are you going to do?”
“Honestly, I have no idea. I might just set up the baby for adoption because there’s no way I’ll be able to take care of it,’ she sighed.
“I will support any decision you make. But what about Mr. Langham? He needs to be punished. You need to go to the police about this.” My voice was rising up. I was angry that he would do this to her, angry that he would take a innocent girl and ruin her like this.
“Amy, I can’t do that. He’ll lose his job… and he has a wife and kids….” Kylie started saying.”
“You know Kylie, sometimes I think you’re too nice. This is serious, regardless if he has a wife and kids, he brought this upon himself and he deserves to suffer the consequences. Letting him get away isn’t the answer.” I interrupted.
“I guess you’re right. Are you still going on that trip?” Kylie asks.
“Hey, don’t change that subject here. But Kylie, I have to. And yes that sounds extremely selfish, but it’ll only be for a couple of days and I’ll be right back,” I reply.
“It’s fine. Here, let me help you pack for the trip. When are you exactly planning to leave, leave?”
“Well I looked at the flights, and the cheapest one I found is in two days,” I remembered.
“Okay, looks like we better get started now,” Kylie replied with a smile.
