"And The Amazing Alex swoops in to save the day!" a boy in a red cape yelled. He jumped off the bed and landed onto the back of a big grumpy dragon, its small wings flapping in distraught.
"Arrghh! You got me!" the dragon wheezed and fell to the floor, dead. Alex cheered with his usual fist pump into the air, his sword in hand. "Yeah!!"
"Alright, you've slain the mighty fire dragon, will the amazing knight Alex go to sleep know?" The dragon shook his head awake, revealing a smiling face underneath the snarling cardboard snout.
"Okay, but after you continue telling me and Wendie the story!" Alex insisted, his red blanket fluttering behind him. "Hold on, I need to finish writing this discovery I made today, I kind of like it." Another boy in bed with large round glasses spoke up. He held a notebook larger than his face in one hand and a ballpoint pen slightly larger than an average pen. As he scribbled, the dragon boy asked, "So, what kind of awesome discovery did you make today?" The boy in bed looked up with an excited look on his face and replied swiftly, "I found out that when a cat collects things, asides from giving them to you, it also makes them feel safer to be around their own trophies that they feel more spiritually connected to. That's probably why Mrs. Sockwill's cat Snookums likes to collect sponges and erasers so much..."
"Are you saying that Snookums likes to clean stuff?" Alex said. "Then that means he's the opposite of Jeffie! Ah!" The dragon tackled Alex playfully and within seconds both of them were laughing till they gasped for breath. "Alright, alright. Wendell, finish writing your discovery and put your notebook and pen away. Alex -sorry- Knight Alex, just stay quiet so that mom won't wake up." Alex immediately slapped a hand over his mouth and held his breath.
"Okay, as promised, I'll tell you the story now." Jeffrey sat in between the two beds. Alex wriggled excitedly in his while Wendel just smiled. Jeff took a deep breath, and started to tell the story. "So, as the three brave Wanderers ventured through the Seasons Forest, they start to see a big white Colvyr tree with a small house in it."
"The Colveer Treehouse!" Alex squeaked. Jeff chuckled, "Yes, the Colvyr Treehouse."
"Anyway, since the weather was getting colder, they decided to go to the treehouse and see whether anyone would let them stay. The three friends went up to the house and knocked on the door. Inside, there was a man. He wore a long coat and a white bucket hat."
"Just like dad!" Wendel exclaimed excitedly. "That's his favorite hat!"
"Yeah," Jeff smiled. "That's right. Oh- And by the way, this guy had wings on his back; like those angel wings, y'know? A-and a tail! Yeah, a lion tail!" -Both Wendel and Alex gasped in unison- "The man let them in his treehouse, and offered them some peppermint tea to warm up." Jeff laughed as Alex and Wendel both squealed excitedly; he knew that it was their favorite thing to drink on a cold winter's day.
"And so," he continued. "While Alphonso and Wayfinder sat by the fire to drink the tea, the man walked up to Jacobs and told him-"
Suddenly, there was the ominous echo of footsteps coming from the hallway outside. All three boys froze, then reacted quickly. Wendel and Alex hid right under the covers of their bed, using their blankets like a shield. Jeff on the other hand, immediately put his back against the door. Quick-witted Alex remembered to turn off the bedside lamp, and the entire room fell into darkness. Jeff could feel his heart pounding in his chest. Slowly, the sound of feet walked away from the door and continued down the hallway...
Jeffrey sighed in relief. Wendel turned the lamp back on and Alex uncovered himself from the sheets, still shaking. Jeff smiled reassuringly, "It's alright, she's gone." Wendel deflated dramatically while Alex flopped back onto his bed, sighing intensely.
"You know what, it's way past your bedtimes, how about you guys head to sleep now." Jeff grinned nervously. Though they were brothers, both of them had very different reactions. In a blink, Wendel bundled in his blanket and went straight to sleep. Alex, however started to whine. "But you haven't finished the story yet!" he pouted. "I wanna know what the man said to Jacob! It might be about the Three Eyes!"
Jeff laughed, pulling the blanket. "It's okay, I can tell you the story tomorrow, okay Alex? I promise."
Alex seemed to be satisfied with the promise and finally, with a kiss goodnight on the forehead from Jeff, he went to sleep. Turning the lamp back off, Jeff went to bed himself. He shared the same room as his brothers, but since there was little space left with two beds and a desk already accumulating the room, as usual, he sat on an armchair that Wendel usually sat in during the day to read his old textbooks and shut his eyes.
Since Jeffrey's father died in an unfortunate accident, his mother had been a deep alcoholic. Despite that, she could never handle her liquor properly, and always came home in an angry and drunk state. If it wasn't for Jeff, Alex probably would've lost an eye and Wendel wouldn't be able to walk again. With his brothers still at a fairly young age, and the fact that he still had to go to high school, Jeff tried his best to stay at home often and stay with his siblings. He didn't know what he would do without them.
He looked at his brothers, the only family members that he truly loved. Not the first time, he made a silent vow, "I love you guys with all my heart and I'll never leave you guys. I'll get us out of here soon."
Never did he know, that someone out there, in this vast universe, would be watching him and his prayers.

I had this story idea since 2020 and it feels so good just to write it out and finally publish it. Abusive parents are terrible. If you have abusive parents, you should go and seek help. From friends, relatives, or just anyone that you think might help you. You should also search up for the help hotline in your country. Idk if it's called that, I just hope that you have a great day and I love you very much. Hope you enjoyed reading this.
