A soft breeze whistle passed an aging oak tree, rattling its delicate branches and making it so the last of its shriveled leafs fell to the brown grass bellow. The sun beamed, melting the frost that had been clinging to everything since the dropping temperatures last night. The crackling of loose gravel alerted a woman that was standing outside, huddling up in her silk robe with her teeth chattering. A sleek black car had pulled into the driveway, obviously brand new from its lack of scratches and chipped paint.
The woman tried to push her jealousy aside at seeing the new vehicle, making her torn up, sky blue pick up truck look like something pulled out of a dumpster fire. However the envy only continued to grow when the cars owner rolled down there window.
"Wow, Summer. I would have expected you to at least throw on a tank top before we got here." A woman with dark glasses scoffed. Her black hair had been pulled back into a pony tail and glittery lip gloss shone on her plump lips. A kid whined in the back seat, and by the rhythmic pounding and the passenger seat bouncing back and forth, she could tell that the woman's kid was- once again- having a tantrum.
"Brittney," She forced a smile. "Come on in, I have the presents for Kenna under the tree." While the woman got out the car and went to fetch her screeching child, Summer rushed back inside with a scowl on her face. "Miley!" She called to her own offspring. "Aunt Brittney is here!"
Rustling and the aggressive sound of the girls footsteps rung through the kitchen as her daughter rushed into the room. Her hair was a ruffled brunette mess and her pajamas (Which were basically her normal clothes.) were wrinkled. She looked like a mess!
The girl already saw her mothers dismayed face at her appearance. "What?" She asked scornfully. "Seriously, Miley?! You look disgusting!" Her mother erupted. The brunette took a moment to over look herself before glancing at her in confusion. "I look just fine. YOU on the other hand look like you just got attacked by a bunch Pigeons."The woman bit her lip, right now was not the time to get into an argument with her daughter.
There door opened with a sickening creek and the sound of a screaming toddler met Mileys ears. Brittney's 4 year old monster stomped into the kitchen, her face red from her continued tantrum. Her lighter brunette hair was pulled into an uncomfortable pony tail of its own, a bright pink bow looking loose and ready to fall near the tails base. Her clothes were disgustingly bright, most of them coming from name brands like Justice. Her twinkle toes tracked in mud, which greatly annoyed Mileys mother.
"Couldn't you have asked her to take her shoes off outside?" Summer asked her sister mildly. The woman shrugged, setting down three small presents on the counter. "She just got those shoes, let her wear them wherever she wants." Brittney's hidden eyes rested on Miley and a rich smile appeared on her face.
"Miley! Look how much you've grown!" Brittney shrieked, rushing forward to bombard her niece in an uncomfortable hug. The woman's car keys and freshly painted nails stabbed into her back and her solid black boots stomped her toe. Miley hissed curses under her breath but reluctantly wrapped her arms around in return.
"How long has it been now? Since Easter?" The woman prompted after finally letting go. "I think..." Miley mumbled, just realizing how fast the year had past by without little notice. "Yea, Miley has grown up, huh? It only felt like yesterday when I was holding her in that hospital bed in 07." Mileys mother hopped into the conversation, her eyes misty as she remembered things of the past.
That was back when my mom and her were close. Now there relationship has fallen to shit. I don't even know why we have them over for Christmas anymore...
Kenna, Brittney's little girl, had disappeared into the living room somewhere, probably snooping through what was left under the tree. She could hear the crinkling of loose paper as the 4 year old kicked around torn wrapping paper.
That's gonna be fun to clean up...
"Miley dear, why don't you open your present that Aunt Brittney got you while we get Kenna sorted?" My mom suggested brightly, walking over to the counter and sorting though the small stack until she found mine. A thin, rectangle that had been wrapped in black wrapping paper decorated with snowflakes. A tag had been slapped on it reading "For Miley Moo!"
Taking a quick moment to cringe at my families "adorable" nickname for me, I snatched the present. I watched my mom and Aunt Brittney rush off into the living room, Brittney shouting "NO MA'AM!" and running over to her child before she even entered the room.
I decided to go outside, Kenna's screeching already starting to make my ears bleed. I breathed in the chilly air, making me remember how much I loved the colder seasons. Not just because my birthday- which took place in October- or because of Christmas, but because of the underrated beauty's that were fall and winter.
I sat down on one of the hard chairs outside, tearing into my present like a wild hyena. The wrapping paper tore off with ease, falling down to the stone floor of my porch and them blowing away on the breeze. (Recycle, kids)
After the present was freed from its paper prison, It immediately stole Miley's attention. It was a copy of the year's newest Pokemon game: Pokemon Let's go Eevee. The game had come out like a year ago, back in November. My best friend, Madi, had gotten the game the day it came out., rambling on and on about how good it was.
Both me and here had obsessed over the Japanese franchise since we were like 4. It's no surprise she had gotten it the day it came out, since her family was more financially flexible than mine.
Did I just wait an entire year just to get a game that will soon be out of fashion due to the new generation coming out?
Yes, yes I did.
And-in my opinion- it was worth it.
With excitement fizzling inside me, I rushed back inside and retrieved my switch, which was charging behind the living room TV. My Mom and Aunt Brittney were still struggling to get Kenna to open her gifts, Mom starting to become impatient.
"If she's not going to open her presents I'll open them for her." My Mom snapped to her sister, who was trying to coax a distracted Kenna into opening her gifts.
Its gonna take them years to get her to open just one preset! What a little shit...
I took shelter in my room, sitting down on my not so clean carpet. I fiddled with the switches opening and pushed the new game in. I had been waiting for this so long!
I opened up the game and it greeted me with a screen to choose what language I preferred. I chose English and moved on. Then it asked what I looked like. I chose the light skinned girl with dark brunette hair pulled back into a loose pony tail. Finally, it asked my name.
I swiftly typed in Miley, thinking nothing of it.
Out of the blue, a heavenly light burst from the console. I hissed, blinded by the harsh light. I dropped the switch in the process, bringing up my hands to rub my eyes.
When I opened them again, the switch was not on the floor like I had predicted. It was levitating, still showing off that bright light.
"W-what the hell?" I whispered under my breath. I felt like I was levitating too...?
The switch flashed, making me cover my eyes again. The floor wasn't beneath me anymore. I couldn't fell anything around me, actually. Just the stinging white light that didn't waste time in engulfing me.
(AHHH, ok it took me FOREVER to get this out but its finally here! I hope you enjoyed the first chapter of this book and I would LOVE to hear feedback <3 Love ya)
