*SCARLETT*
It was eleven at night and I had just woken up. I hear the door open and close, indicating my dad had gotten back from dinner.
"Scarlett." He calls for me from
downstairs. I walk out of my room. "Yes, father?" I ask, pacing downstairs. I hoped to not trip since I had woken up not even fifteen minutes before he came home. He patted down the spot next to him. "Have a seat." He watches as I walk over to the counter and lean against it. "Or do that." He trailed off."Listen, Scar," He sounded serious. That worried me. Whenever he's serious, it's never something good. "You know I had dinner with Mr. Grain, and he made an order." His hands clasp together as my anxiety increases. I raised a brow. "Go on." I watch as my father sighs. "He ordered me to assign you as Axel Grain's personal bodyguard."
"WHAT?!"
I'm in shock. I feel nothing else as my heart dropped down to my feet. "Father, I'm sorry. But there is no way!—" I shout in disbelief.
"There's no way that I will bodyguard some rich boy.""Scarlett, listen to me. If you don't take this offer, I could die. They could have me killed in seconds." His voice trembles, like he was actually afraid. The idea is unimaginable. Your own best friend, killing you? I stare at him as my face and heart are now at my feet. "What?" I whisper, not being able to think. "What do you mean?" I lean in closer. He takes a large breath before he answers. "I was threatened, Scarlett. He told me that I could be dead in seconds, if I didn't agree." He stares at the floor while I stare at him recite what happened. I try to figure out his expression and what he's showing, yet we're both speechless.
"S-So you're telling me that... you were threatened by your best friend, just for his son to be safe..?" I try to put it in simple words, yet I can't tell if I made it sound worse or not.
All he does is nod as I stare at him and notices our blank expressions. He still stares at the floor. "I'm sorry, Scarlett. I tried. But, money gets the best of people." He keeps staring as his voice breaks, hoping he won't cry because I can't comfort anyone not even myself.
I need to get out of here.I stand up from the couch, walking upstairs removing myself from that sorrowing yet awkward conversation.
I walk inside of my room, shutting the door behind me as I grab my phone and tap on Deon's contact. I start messaging him, just telling him to meet me at our local coffee shop tomorrow morning.
I set my phone down on my nightstand as I lay in bed, pulling the covers over myself and staring at the ceiling like I'm counting sheep.
My insomnia is going to kill me tonight.*****
"Yo, Scar." Deon snaps in front of my face. It wakes me up as everything comes to sudden realization. He studies me. "Are you good?"
I look at him, alarmed. "Yeah." I rub my eyes. "Sorry." I apologize as I see his face shift. "What's wrong?"
"Hm?" I look up at him. "Oh, it's nothing. I didn't get much sleep again. Nothing unusual." I watch as he grabs my hand and gives me a reassuring smile. "I'm sorry to hear that."Deon and I were in the nearby coffee shop. It's been our favorite place to go to ever since high school. As stupid and basic as it sounds, it's pretty true.
"Deon, I have something to tell you." I break our sweet moment of silence with a sentence that can make tables turn. He looks a little nervous, but also interested. "What's up?"
And hell, I don't even know how to say it."Fuck it. I'm getting straight to the point, I have a job as a bodyguard for Axel Grain." I speak with ease, yet I could barely get the words out. He puts down his coffee cup. "Woah. I'm sorry?" He still seems intrigued, also a bit worried. I sigh, feeling like this was a mistake. "I know. It's sudden and unexpected. Basically my father and Mr. Grain had dinner last night and he threatened my father." I cross my arms, watching the expression on Deon's face change.
