Brian ran hard, wondering where Daithi and Séan were. His connection to the air patterns told him that they was within a miles distance, but not whether they were moving or if they were okay. It'd been 3 days since he'd seen them.
They were on the run from some normie hunters, people who hunted the people with abilities. Brian normally would have just flown away but one of them had caught him and held him captive for two days and snapped a joint in his left wing. It hung painfully behind him, the other curled tight against his body.
A bullet flew past his head and Brian let out a startled cry, dodging around trees and using the air to knock some over. He hoped it'd be enough to cover his tracks.
He found a hallowed tree and dove into it, biting his lip hard enough to draw blood as his wing protested. He pulled it towards him, holding his breath to stop the sob of pain as he listened over the sound of his beating heart for the hunters.
Several minutes passed and he heard twigs snapping, his heart skipping a beat as he curled into an even smaller ball.
"Where the fuck did it go? It's got a broken wing, it can't have flown off," one snapped, a shifting of a rifle sounding and several foot steps.
"Spread out! Keep searching!" Another yelled and the footsteps surrounded him, Brian closing his eyes in terror.
A loud crash sounded and his eyes flew open, seeing several trees fall and a couple land on a few of the hunters. Vines spread out, thorns growing as long as an inch long and wrapping around the other hunters.
Brian held his breath hopefully, seeing a blur rush to him. "Brian?" Séan whispered into the tree and Brian crawled out, body aching horribly and a severe burning in his wing.
"Oh Brine, what did they do to you?" Daithi whispered as Séan helped him stand but he staggered and fell to his knees again. The adrenaline filled fear had faded now that his two best friends were here and his body was giving out.
"They broke my wing," he whispered and Daithi sucked in a breath. "Let me see it, I can at least set it and get it wrapped up so it's not dangling," he said determinedly, kneeling behind Brian.
Séan handed Brian a torn piece of fabric from a shirt in his backpack and Brian fitted it between his teeth, squeezing his eyes shut.
"One, two, three!" Daithi counted down and snapped the bone back into place, Brian letting out a loud scream of pain and his vision spotting. Daithi worked quick, arranging the wing to mirror the other and using his vines to hold it in place.
"All done, Brine, you're done now," Daithi said worriedly and Brian spit the cloth out, gasping with tears coming out of his still closed eyes.
"How- how much further do we need to go?" Brian whispered and Séan frowned, checking the area before flying off above the tree line. He landed back down a few seconds later and said, "I'm guestimating maybe an hours walk before we reach the city, and there we can hot wire a car and drive to the other side of the city where the flyer said the bunker is," he said and Brian nodded, searching hard for the energy to stand.
"I might need help standing, and walking, I can't feel my legs very well," he said quietly and Séan and Daithi nodded, putting their arms under his shoulders and lifting him. They supported him between them and started off at a slow and steady pace.
Taking breaks for Brian turned the hour long trek to almost two hours, but soon enough they emerged from the tree line to a large parking lot. It was almost completely empty but there were three or four cars left by the warehouse.
Daithi checked a car and found the drivers door unlocked so he unlocked all the doors and Séan helped Brian into the backseat. Brian collapsed into the seat, aches seemingly increasing in pain level as Daithi worked on hot wiring the vehicle.
