Finally. After hearing the door slam close, I creep down the stairs, quietly in case my mother or her boyfriend is still there. As I look around and see no one, nor hear anything, I quickly make it to the kitchen. Grabbing leftovers from the previous meal, I warm them up and head back to my room

3 more days. 3 more days till I get my next paycheck and can finally leave this hellhole. Finishing up the food, I set the plate on my nightstand and put on my head phones. In a couple more hours I have to leave for work.

I just pray they won't be home when I have to. At the age of 20, I still live in my mother's house. I never knew my father, he left before I was born. Unlike my siblings, I haven't been able to leave. With my mother stealing my money for her drugs and alcohol, I haven't been able to save enough money to leave.

It's finally the day. Pay day. The day I'm free from my mother. The day I get to leave. I already gave my boss a week's notice that I would be leaving, meaning this is my final pay check.

As soon as I got home, I got to my room and started packing. If I want to leave, I have to hurry. They could come back at any moment. Shoving the rest of my things in my last suitcase, I took a cab to the air port. Checking my phone for the time, I see that it shows 6:56 pm. My mother and her boyfriend would usually be home by then. Powering off my phone, I board the plane and wait for it to take off.

When we finally land in New Jersey, I feel less nervous than I did before. I'm free.

I arrived at my new apartment I would be living in. It's tiny, a bit run down, but it's comfortable enough for me. Heading to my room to unpack my things, I look at the bare hallway. Space for pictures, unlike most who would be able to fill the empty spaces with perfect family memories, all i have are drawings.

After finally unpacking all my clothes, I take out the few belongings I own. A book, my phone, headphones, pillow, and a small throw blanket. Laying the blanket on the ground, I sit down and find some jobs online. I only had enough money to get a plane ticket. I would've tried to save more if I could've.

After a while of job searching, it was completely dark outside. Yawning, I layed down and fell asleep, and for the first time in years, I slept peacefully without worrying if I was going to wake up the next day.

A few days after I moved into my new apartment, I got accepted for a job at a diner. It's not far from my apartment, so I can walk there without needed a car. After changing into descent clothes, I lock my door and start heading towards the diner.
