Soft music flowed throughout the kitchen as Sam stood there, glass of water in hand. He had woken up from a nightmare. Memories of the unforgotten past. He found himself setting down the glass on the counter as his hand start shaking.
There was no denying that he had been a horrible person, there's many things he regrets, but now everything had settled. Well as settled as the server could be.
Ponk now had a prosthetic that Sam had helped make with redstone. In Sam's mind he focused on the fact that it happened. It shouldn't have happened in the first place, but it did. No one was in their right minds then. Ponk with the stealing of the card and more so how he had dealt with it as the warden. He had made up for it and Ponk had forgiven him, but Sam didn't think that he deserved it. Not yet at least.
The old prisoner, Dream was now rehabilitating with his family and was doing so much better. Prison was horrible for him especially with the daily torture from that duck. He's already admitted his involvement and has since moved in with his husband. The other shoe has yet to drop and sometimes Sam wonders if it ever will. Other times he wonders if he should be the one to drop it. Sometimes he wonders if it does drop, what would happen. He would never tell anyone, but he hopes Quackity gets what he deserves; Some therapy.
Then there was Tommy, the poor kid. He had so much on his plate and Sam just made it worse. He should've listened to the him, but he didn't. Maybe things would have ended different if he did. Tommy had forgiven him and the little silver band on his ring finger was reassurance of that. Though, the kid did make sure to let him know what he would do if he broke his dad's heart. All three of them did actually. Sam shivered from the memory of those threats.
As he stared out of the window at the falling snow as it clouded the dark sky, he wondered if there will be storm soon. Upstairs, his husband was most likely still sleeping. Sighing, he reassured himself that he deserved to have a loving family. Much like everyone, including Dream, deserved too.
In another room was a clock just barely audible over the music as well as his thoughts. The clock didn't work. Despite the ticking, it was always an hour ahead. Which Sam was envious of, living in the future instead of waiting it out would be great. Right now at least, he thought that. Stuck in the past, his thoughts swirling around going from one bad thing to the next.
Someone entering the kitchen broke him out of these thoughts. Binging him back to the present, still yearning for the future where everything might be better. Turning, Sam looked down at a sleepy Philza. Not the Philza that killed his son in the past, but the Philza that wouldn't let him fix the clock in the living room. He hoped to never get used to the sight of the unruly blonde bird's nest of hair and those tired blue eyes.
The winged man came closer and as he rested his head on Sam's chest, the heart in it beating wildly, he asked, "Couldn't sleep?"
Sam wrapped his arms loosely around Philza as he answered, "Same nightmares it has been."
Wings moved to hug him as he received another question accompanied by a yawn, "Wanna talk about it?"
"Hm..." Sam thought about it for a moment as he listened to the soft music coming from the jukebox, "Not tonight."
"That's okay, mate." His husband mumbled into his chest, "Take your time."
And he was.
For now though, swaying in the kitchen in the late hours of the night with his husband in their pyjamas, was enough for him. The flurry outside still going as they did, focused on the music and the warmth of each other. They stayed like that until finally the song slowly faded and they parted, Sam leaning down to place a soft kiss on Philza's forehead.
He leaned against him, tired after being woken at such a late hour. So, Sam laced their hands together, gently guiding him towards the stairs. They both stumbled up tiredly and as they made their way into their bedroom, they collapsed onto the bed.
Pulling the covers over, they both got comfortable and they turned to face each other. Philza latched onto him and Sam clung right back. Legs overlapping, as his husband closed his eyes. Soon, his husband was back to the realm of dreams, head tucked under his. Sam stared at him for a moment before finally closing his own eyes and as he drifted off, he realized that maybe the present isn't that bad especially if he had his husband by his side.
