I was shouting up the stairs for Violetta, checking my watch every two seconds like that would magically make her move faster. We were already an hour late. An hour. But when she finally walked down the stairs...
Yeah. Suddenly being late didn't feel like the problem anymore.
She was wearing a short dress — short enough that my brain short‑circuited for a second. My eyes dragged down her legs before I could stop myself. When she reached the last step, I automatically held out my hand to steady her because those heels looked like they were plotting her downfall.
She turned to grab her bag from the sofa, and that's when I saw it.
Her bare back.
Completely bare.
Leon: No way, Violetta, you are not wearing that to the party.
She spun around, confused, eyebrows raised.
Violetta: Why not, Leon?"
I couldn't exactly say because every guy in that room will stare at you and I might commit a crime, so I went with the first excuse that came to mind.
Leon: It's freezing outside, and you have nothing to cover you. And if you think I'm giving you my jacket, you can dream on. I'm not catching a cold because of you. So either go upstairs and change, or... catch a cold.
Smooth. Real smooth.
I sat on the sofa, pretending I wasn't internally panicking, until she came back down wearing a gold dress that covered her back. Better. Safer. Less likely to give me a heart attack.
She put on her coat and we finally left — late, as always, because of her.
The moment we walked into the party, Federico and his girlfriend came straight toward us.
Federico: Dude, where have you been?
Leon: We're here now, that's what matters.
He nodded, then pulled his girlfriend closer.
Federico: I want you to meet Ludmila Ferro. She's insanely good in bed. Who did you bring, Leon?
I glanced at Violetta. She looked down at her feet, suddenly shy, like she thought she wasn't enough.
Leon: This is Violetta, My roommate. We're just friends.
She smiled at me — small, soft — and I looked away before I could think too much about it.
Leon: Anyway, I'm going to get Violetta a drink. Where's the rest of the gang?
Federico: Over there,
I grabbed Violetta's hand so she wouldn't get lost in the crowd. Her fingers slipped into mine like it was the most natural thing in the world. When we reached the table, I introduced her to the girls and helped her sit down. She looked up at me, worried I was leaving her.
I leaned in, whispering,
Jorge: I'll be right back, okay? What do you want to drink?
Violetta: Lemonade and lime, please,
Leon: The girls won't leave you, I won't be long.
At the bar, Maxi and Broduey joined me.
Maxi: Who's that girl with you?
Leon: She's my roommate,Is it bad to bring my roommate to a party? I couldn't just leave her home alone.
When we got back to the table, Violetta wasn't there.
Leon: Francesca, where's Violetta?
Francesca: Oh, it's okay, Leon, She just went to the toilet with Camila.
I sat down, took a sip of my beer, and tried to act normal. When Violetta came back, she slid into the seat beside me. I didn't stand — I just let her climb over my legs, her hand brushing my thigh as she settled next to me.
As the night went on, she leaned into me more and more, her head occasionally resting on my shoulder. It was getting late, and I knew she was tired.
Leon: *whispering* Violetta, you ready to go home?
Violetta: *Whispers* Yes, Leon,
I stood, helped her up, and grabbed her coat. She hugged the girls goodbye, exchanging numbers like she'd known them for years. I draped her coat over her shoulders and she took my hand again as we walked out.
I opened the car door for her, waited until she was inside, then drove us home. She went upstairs to get ready for bed while I looked at a letter that had come in the mail — something I'd deal with tomorrow.
Then I heard her voice.
Violetta: Leon?
Leon: Yeah, I'm coming.
I went upstairs, climbed into bed beside her, and wrapped my arm around her waist. She relaxed instantly, her back pressing into my chest.
And just like that, I fell asleep holding the girl I kept telling everyone was "just my roommate."
