Ebony's day started pretty normally. She woke up in a makeshift shed in a hidden alley of Queens, New York. She ravaged the dumpsters for food, and, as usual, found nothing decent. Luckily, Ebony didn't care about decent. She cared about edible.
Ebony made her way through the dirty misshapen streets. She made sure to hurry because when she made it in time, she got day old bread from the baker's wife. She rounded the corner ran straight into a boy about her age. She flew backwards and hit her head on the brick wall of the post office.
She din't know how long she had been out. It could have been five minutes or thirty. When she did wake though, her bright purple eyes met the boy's sparkling periwinkle ones. As she stood gingerly, she noticed his shocked expression as he stared at her eyes. The staring itself was normal, but not the recognition she saw flash in his eyes as he said confused, "You're a fairy?"
She bolted. What else was she supposed to do? The weird dude was creeping her out. She rounded her second corner of the day and found herself running into That Boy yet again. He grabbed her wrist and pulled a small clear gem from his pocket. He held it out to Ebony and she cautiously took it. She stared at the gem as he explained how it would adjust to a person's appearance and personality when a strand of the persons hair was rapped around it then placed somewhere on a persons body.
The gem sparkled as Ebony rolled it in her fingers. "Um, you're sure this's safe, right?" Ebony asked warily. She sighed when he nodded. "Might as well," she muttered under her breath. She plucked one of her long black hairs, then she placed the the little jewel on the tip of her worn scarlet headband, after rapping the hair around the gem. A weird tingly feeling spread through Ebony's body. She gasped, "Am I dying?" Light shone around her. It was so bright, Ebony was sure she would be blind if the light ever receded.
After what seemed like hours, although Ebony knew it was only a matter of seconds, she saw the light fading away. She glanced down at herself and noticed that she was wearing a completely different outfit than she was before. "I'm, like... a warrior princess," she thought in awe.
Her shiny black hair had been swept gracefully behind her ears and was pinned in place by an amethyst encrusted gold hair pin, that she guessed used to be her headband. Instead of the old goodwill t-shirt and blue jeans, she had on a long-sleeved purple blouse, purple leggings, and a breastplate that matched her new hair pin. Her black Nike high tops had been changed for gold-leather combat boots with amethyst buckles. "Apparently, everything needs to match my purple eyes. That'll totally make me fit in," she thought as she snorted. Even though it was a little overkill, it was still pretty cool. Not to mention the dagger hidden in the legging pocket.
Ebony turned to the boy and said, "Thanks, I guess." The boy sighed, "My name's Lem. Whats yours?" She grumbled, "What's it to you. I don't think you really care, otherwise you would have let go of my arm already." Lem just sighed louder. "I'll let go as soon as I know I can trust you. Anyway, its my turn," he said as he pulled a gold ring from his other pocket. He slipped the ring onto his index finger and under went his own transformation. His transformation, in Ebony's opinion, at least, made him look like an old-school professor. He wore black dress pants, a white collared shirt, fancy dress shoes, and a bow tie. Like, who wears bow ties anymore.
Suddenly, Lem tightened his grip on Ebony and ran. Ebony was used to fast, having lived on the streets of New York, but this was a whole new level. Soon, they were skimming over the water. Cool mist surrounded them as they gained speed. Ebony scanned the horizon looking for land up ahead, not even thinking about the fact that it wasn't possible to either go that fast or to run over water.
Eventually, Ebony spotted an island. They landed on a soft sandy beach. Lem pulled Ebony to towards a forest up ahead. The trees created a canopied path further into the forest. They raced along the path until a valley below them caused Lem to pause. Ebony glanced over and her breath caught in her throat.
