"No!" Ebony screamed, "She can't be hurt! What happened?!"
"The same guy that kidnapped me four years ago took her. He brought her here and she was unconscious. I didn't know what to do so I thought I would try to see you again even though it's really hard."
"Wait you're causing this?! That's impossible!"
"I guess you haven't figured it out yet. Somehow I control fire and you control water. And don't ask me why 'cuz I've been wondering for years."
"Well, is Moony okay? D'you know what's wrong? Oh, and what's your name. Mine's Ebony."
"Oh, I'm Ember. And I know your name. That kidnapper dude has been ranting about you 'taking his place' for years. And I don't know if she's okay. That's why I called. I need help. Her head's bleeding like crazy and I can't get it to stop. She's still breathing, but just barely."
"Is there anything there you could use to stop the blood? Or water to clean the blood?"
"Nothing. We need to hurry! I can feel my power fading. I probably won't be able to call for another few days at least. I just wish I had never gotten captured. Then, maybe, we wouldn't be in this whole mess."
"No! Don't blame yourself! This kidnapper dude, he caused all this. And don't worry, when I see him I'll smack him hard enough to give him a bad case of memory loss. Then, if he provokes me anymore, I'll make sure he gets a severe brain-damaging concussion."
Ember laughed, "Well now, don't forget about me! I might just send him into a long painful coma, and if he wakes up, you can send him into a new coma." Ember's image blinked in and out a couple of times before disappearing completely. Though Ebony was able to hear him curse in frustration before he flickered away.
Ebony jumped when a hand touched her shoulder. She glanced behind her to see Raegan looking tired and hopeless. She hated that look. It was the look she used to have when living on the streets. When she first met Raegan, which turns out to have been only three hours ago, he seemed so happy and carefree, but now he seemed to have aged several years. "He really loves Moony," she thought with a jolt. Ebony also realized his emotions would cloud his better judgment. She would have to make sure he stayed on track, even though she wished she could run and break apart whatever was keeping Moony and Ember captive.
"It'll be alright," Ebony says, surprising even herself. Raegan turns to her with a blank expression.
"How?" He says, voice cracking a little. Ebony feels heartbroken at the sight of his silent tears.
"I don't know. But it has to be. The world couldn't be that horrible, could it?"
"I don't think I can do it." Ebony stays silent, not knowing what to say.
Mabel speaks for the first time since the fire, "Yes, you can! You have never been a quitter. Don't start now. Besides, we're all in this together."
Ebony gasps suddenly, stumbling back a few steps, and being the clumsy person she is, Ebony trips over a tree root, and Raegan has to catch her. They turn towards a figure in a black cloak. The same figure that took Moony. "Where is she!" demands Raegan.
Ebony pulls the long silver dagger from her pocket, hiding it behind her back in case she needs it. The figure strides over to where Raegan is clutching his fists, stopping a few inches from the boy's face. "Leave him alone!" Ebony shouts, her voice steady despite her fear.
"And why would I do that?" reply's a voice that Ebony suddenly recognizes.
"Set Rompi?"
"Back off, little girl! You're messing with things bigger than you know. If you're not careful your sweet little Moony might get hurt"
"Don't touch my sister!" Raegan growls pouncing on The Figure, as Ebony had decided to call him. The Figure threw Raegan off and disappeared just as quickly as he came.
Raegan collapsed in sobs and Ebony held him, letting her own tears drop into her lap. Mabel came behind them rapping them both in a hug, as she sang softly a lullaby she had found in a human book:
Are you, are you comin' to the tree?
Where they strung up a man, they say who murdered three
Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree
Are you, are you comin' to the tree
Where dead man called out for his love to flee?
Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree
Are you, are you comin' to the tree
Where I told you to run so we'd both be free?
Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree
Are you, are you comin' to the tree
Where necklace of hope, side by side with me?
Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree
Are you, are you comin' to the tree
Where I told you to run, so we'd both be free?
Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree
Are you, are you comin' to the tree?
Where they strung up a man, they say who murdered three
Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree
Are you, are you comin' to the tree
Where the dead man called out for his love to flee?
Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree
Raegan sniffled and croaked out, "Was that supposed to make me feel worse? Because if so, you succeeded."
