"We experience conflict at three levels – material, mental and spiritual. At the material level, conflict is everywhere. Atoms collide against atoms. Weeds take over carefully manicured flowers. Packs of wolves fight for control of territory.
And we humans have disagreements with children, siblings, spouses, bosses, co-workers, states and countries. To deal with conflict at the material level, we need to learn how to act, and what to say, in any situation.
Now, here's the second kind of conflict. How we conduct ourselves in material conflict is largely dependent on the state of our minds. Our minds are always in conflict, primarily between our rational side and our ego.
Our primal urges constitute the ego, the part of our mind that oversimplifies and exaggerates situations, and responds to every situation with a "fight or flight" reaction, and shuts off the rational part of our mind that can think logically and clearly.
And even when our rational mind is active, we are unable to make the right decision because we cannot resolve conflicting arguments. We are always talking to ourselves in our head. "I should buy this shirt". "No wait, that shirt looks better". "But this one is on sale".
Conflict at the material level, and at the mental level, is pervasive. It is an integral part of life. We cannot escape it. But so what? Shouldn't we just accept this state of affairs?
Quitting is the default response of the ego. In his speech to Shri Krishna, Arjuna used logic to justify his quitting the battle. This is what many of us toO – we run away from our conflicts, and use logic, or even God or religion – a whole host of rationalizations – to justify our quitting to ourselves, and to others.
Arjuna now thinks: Who am I? Am I the warrior fighting for a just cause? Or am I the beloved student of my teacher? If I am that warrior, I should be in the Pandava army. If I am that beloved student and relative, I should be in the Kaurava army. But I am both. I am all of these roles, and many more. So what should I do? Since I don't know how to reconcile my identity, let me quit – it is the easiest option I have.
This confusion of identity is the third type of conflict, the spiritual conflict. Unless we know who we are, what God is, and what our connection to that God is, we will never be able to completely resolve all of our material and mental conflicts."
Oof! Jungkook closed the book with a loud thump. The particles of dust emitted out of the book made their way into his nose causing him to sneeze continuously.
"Jungkookah! What happened? Did you understand the moral?" The elder stood up from the chair as he shoved his hands inside the pockets of his hoodie.
"Jin hyung! The moral of the story is that Interpretation is something Jeon Jungkook can never do. I don't understand a word written in this book. How will I become an Einstein if I am still in the level of a 3rd grader?" Jungkook replied, his voice filled with annoyance.
"Jungkookah! It is simple. What was the major problem?" Jin asked folding his hands over his chest.
"That Arjuna is battling some conflicts." Jungkook said.
"What conflicts?"
"You should ask Arjuna about it." Jungkook replied rolling his eyes.
"JEON JUNGKOOK!" Jin slammed the table annoyed.
"Fine! Fine! Ummm.... I seriously don't know." Jungkook spoke.
"Read it again."
"Fine!" Jungkook said as he started reading it again word by word.
After some time,
"Self-Realization? Arjuna did not know who he was in real." Jungkook snapped.
"Right! The confusion of identity. Arjuna did not who he really was. Should he be the one supporting the Pandavas or the one supporting the Kauravas." Jin said.
"Now, who the hell are these Pandas and Koalas?" The younger irked.
"Read it again." Jin replied calmly triggering Jungkook.
"Hyung! Are you making fun of me? Why do I need to learn this Interpretation thing when I have you and Yoongi Hyung. Like, It is not necessary for every detective to know Interpretation, Right." Jungkook yelled.
"Jungkook! Every detective knows Interpretation. Yoongi and me are just a pro in this. Do you think that the others don't know this? They do. But you don't even know the basics of it. Are you gonna come to me every time for interpreting something? No, right? So, you should know how to do this. Training for becoming a detective isn't that easy. Now, zip your mouth and read it again. Rule No. 1 : Read the piece of information again and again till you understand every letter of it." Jin replied composedly.
"Hyung, I wish I could go back in time and change my decision of being with you as an assistant. Hoseok hyung is much more better than you. I envy Jimin. He chose Hoseok hyung and I have never seen seen him complaining about the detective!" Jungkook said.
"Who knows! You have only seen him as a ball of sunshine. But, I have seen him in his strict detective mode." Jin shrugged off.
Jungkook rolled his eyes and went back to read the sheet again.
After some time,
"I think the Pandas and Koalas are two armies fighting. The Pandas are warriors fighting for a just cause and the Koalas have his teacher and relatives fighting against it. Arjuna is confused whether he should side with the wise warriors or his teacher and relatives. Now, don't tell me to pronounce their names correctly. Pandas and Koalas is much comfortable." Jungkook spoke out.
"You got it right. This is the difference. You had to read this piece four times to figure this out while I found this out when you were reading it out loud in the first go. Rule No. 2 : Concentrate on whatever you are observing carefully. The smallest clues can solve the biggest mysteries. Remember the Zephany Nurse case. What do you think was the clue?"
"The resemblance between Cassidy and Zephany."
"Yes, Zephany was kidnapped by a woman disguised as a nurse two days after her birth. Her parents spent years trying to find her, but no avail. Even after their family kept growing with the arrival of their second daughter, Cassidy, they kept a yearly remembrance of Zephany.
Years later, Cassidy began attending a new school and became friendly with a girl four years her senior. Even fellow classmates noticed their strong resemblance. When their parents learned about the striking similarity, they decided to investigate. DNA evidence soon concluded that the girl, who had grown up with a different family under a different name, was in fact the missing Zephany. So see, How small clues lead to solving the most mysterious crimes." Jin explained.
The sound of the doorbell being rung caught their attention and a little later, the maid ushered in a person.
A stout man in his fifties still panting from his exertions was met. It looked as if he ran with great speed all the way to the house. His face was strongly marked and he had a quite imposing figure. He was well dressed but it was the way he ran that made him look eccentric. Strange contortions marked his visage. Consternation writ large on his face. The man asked, looking from one man to the other, "Mr. Kim?"
Jin spoke. "That is me."
