I stared at the numbers again, this time scaring my eyes and slowly imprinting the blue penned digit to my brain. With the room booked, we had little time... Or probably no time at all.
Error Number two.
Time was a friend to all and a friend to none. That was one of the lessons I remembered from multiple classes and hours of boring lectures three years back. But who said it? Who was the bloody lecturer that said it? I flexed my brain with my eyes still fixed on the figures.
Lizzy time.
I turned to Eunice who's brown eyes flickered with anxiety from behind her glasses as she watched me dig into the paper. She bit her lower lips and took a step closer.
"Babe-"
"I know." I moved past her to my purse that was placed beside her laptop which had the front view of my location dancing on its screen.
The perfectly carved 'S' was visible despite the picture being a distance shot. Debbie was becoming good at handling her camera, a natural with the need of a little professional polishing. Her hands were quick to marry the second-hand DSLR camera the moment she tore it open from its box.
Her first picture with the camera still hung next to our television.
Stealing a glance at the screen, I zipped open my purse and exhaled as the tiny white-capped bottle smiled at me.
"Debbie is already in position and Rose is waiting for the pickup," Eunice said.
"Ok."
"Listen, we've been working on this one for a month now. You know he is different."
I nodded staring at her small structure. Eunice was a fair-skinned beauty and the mum of the group, her smile was a thunderous boost of courage dipped with the positivity that everything would go right... Even when there could be a flaw. Her fingers moved through her natural corn-roll braids.
"All we have to do is follow the plan," I said, the same time as she did.
"Fool." She smiled, exposing the dimpled cheeks that lit her eyes as she adjusted the gown which hugged my body like a second skin, resting on all my curves with a long slit driving up my thighs. Her hands caressed the red fabric slowly, just like they did the morning we all went shopping.
The gown took fifty thousand naira off our group savings, a painful price we paid with great reluctance and tearing eyes as we stared at the debit alert and our account balance. But Chief Aremo Sijuade was a big catch... An expensive catch with a diamond resting on his fat fingers and the title of a businessman and a politician crowning his head.
Holding tightly to my purse I moved for the door, my heels kissing the tiled floor with echoing impact that rang in my ears. Each sound was a reminder of my role in tonight's game.
The slut for the night.
The thought rang through my brain as my Uber drove through the street of Abuja with the low tone of fireboy's Magic reducing my rigid muscles as I stared out the window like a child, fascinated by the full moon. I blinked at the beautiful light as it drew me closer.
Most times I wonder how he did it, Was he alone and needed a companion? Was the moon like a ball to him? The Bible wasn't enough of a teacher especially to someone like me who detested everything that present-day Christianity had to offer.
End time church, that was what they called it.
The beeping of my timer drew my attention back to reality. I had fifteen minutes, and thankfully as I strained my eyes I made out the well-decorated gate of sunrise hotel.
