Back to School

Despite both working late nights at the Wyrm, waking up early in the mornings was a normal occurrence for Sweet Pea and I. However, on the morning that I was to start my new teaching job, Sweet Pea woke up before I did and surprised me with a nice breakfast in bed. And, as I got ready for work, Sweet Pea made the bed and cleaned up the kitchen.

"Look at you," I teased Sweet Pea lightly, watching him clean the counters. "All domestic."

"You know what they say," Sweet Pea grinned broadly, tossing the dish towel over his shoulder. "Happy wife, happy life."

"Oh, yeah?" I snickered, wrapping my arms around his neck. "Is that what they say?"

"And they mean it." Sweet Pea nodded, wrapping his arms around my waist. "Don't be late for school, Mrs. Mitchell."

"I'll see you later, Mr. Mitchell." I smiled softly, leaning up and kissing him softly.

"Wait," Sweet Pea called as I headed for the door.

"Yes?" I asked, grabbing my keys from the hook by the door.

"Are you really wearing that to school?" He questioned, raising an eyebrow in my direction.

"Of course I am." I scoffed, picking up my helmet from the table. "My students need to know that their soon to be favorite teacher is a badass."

"Good morning, class." I greeted, scanning the classroom with a small smirk. "Welcome to history. Before we jump into coursework, I can already see some of you are eyeing my jacket. So, let's start with a Q&A."

One of the younger Serpents raised his hand, and I nodded in his direction as I sat cross-legged on my desk.

"What do we call you?" He asked. "Feels weird seeing Mrs. Mitchell on that name plate."

"You're all seniors." I started. "Which means you're about to be adults in the real world. You can call me whatever you want, but try to stay away from boss during school hours, alright Jay?"

"Sure bo-" Jay cleared his throat. "Kitty."

"You're still a Serpent?" Another student asked. "How can you be a teacher and a Serpent?"

"Name?" I asked.

"Laura." She answered.

"Yes, Laura." I nodded. "I am still a Serpent. But that won't get in the way of my teachings. In fact, this class isn't going to be dedicated to the history of the United States, or the world. Here, we'll be focusing on the history of our town, and that includes the Serpents."

"Did you really graduate from Harvard Law?" Another student questioned. "My name's Ace, by the way."

"Yes, Ace, I did." I nodded again.

"But you look too young to have a law degree." Ace mused.

"It took a lot of focus," I started. "And a lot of hard work, but I got it done. I was told by my professors that I was too young to take the bar exam. I don't take no for an answer."

"Sandy," A girl spoke, watching me curiously. "I heard you almost died. Is that true?"

"Not entirely," I shook my head softly. "Legally, I've been dead twice. Once from a bullet fired on Riot Night- which we will be covering this year- and again in the Canadian wilderness, where my dear friend Sergeant Andrews and I were attacked by a bear."

"You really are a cat." Another young Serpent snickered.

"Cats have nine lives, Murdoc." I smirked. "As far as we know, I've only got three. And that's the one I'm on right now. Any other questions before we begin our lesson?"
