Sirens echoed off in the distance.
"They're almost here."
"It's about time," Marci said.A police cruiser came to a fast stop which was quickly followed by firemen.
"Hurry! There isn't much time!"
Jessica shouted to the cop.
" Water is filling up the trench!"
" Okay kids, we'll take it from here."
The cop backed the kids up away from the hole. Jessica stood up, dusting the dirt off her knees. She watched nervously as they went to work, trying to rescue the city workers. Jessica gripped Mathew's arm as she watched the firemen work fast to shore up the trench. She didn't want to leave until she knew everyone was safe. One of the firemen, went into the trench, using a ladder to create a safe route. Mathew put his arm around her, holding her tight."Look, they're getting them out," Marci said.
"Thank goodness!" Jessica said. When everyone was out, one of the police officers came over to them.
"It's getting late. You guys should get home before they get worried.""Probably,"Steve agreed.
" I couldn't help but notice that the call came in before school was out," the cop said.
" Uh..."Mathew said.
"It's good thing you guys decided to skip school today but I wouldn't recommend you do it on a daily basis."
" No, Sir we won't do it again," Jessica said."Good ," the cop said.
Marci came in close. "We should be getting home. It is getting late"
"Yeah, I'm glad we decided to skip today," Steve said.
"For sure," Mathew said.Jessica nervously fidgeted with her phone."So, Steve and Mathew, I guess we will see t you two at school tomorrow."
" See you guys tomorrow," Mathew said.
" You sure you don't want one of us to walk you home?" Steve asked."No, we'll be fine," Marci said.
As they split up, Steve and Mathew, started walking toward home in the opposite direction of the girls. As they walked down Kelker Street, Marci came in close. " This was a crazy day."
"It was!"
Marci sighed. "It feels good when you help people."
"It really does."Jessica felt her phone vibrate. She took it from her pocket and looked at it.
Thanks for helping the city workers.
"It was no problem, Jessica said as she showed Marci the text from Corey.
"So, does he need us to help anyone; else?" Marci asked.
"I don't think so."
When I see someone else that need help, I'll just text you.
"Okay, Corey,"Jessica said.
Okay, bye for now Jessica.
"Bye," whispered Jessica.
"Are you spending the night at my house on Friday?" Marci asked.
"Yeah. My dad said I can!"
"Oh, good. You can come to my house then after school," Marci said.
"That will be perfect."
They lingered on the sidewalk outside Marci's apartment. "We can't tell anyone about what happened today."Jessica nodded. "No one at school can know."
"The guys know."
"They won't talk, Marci said.Jessica smiled as she thought about Mathew. He was cute."This will be our secret."
"You okay?" Marci asked.
Jessica shook off the thought of Mathew. "Yeah, I'm good. See you at school tomorrow."
Jessica headed down to the next apartment building, all the while wondering when she would hear from Corey again.
