standing at the platform, thestia wound her arms around astoria's waist, lifting her up as though she wasn't already seven and starting to get too big for it. she placed a gentle kiss on her cheek, doing the same with daphne and her guardians, before turning to board the train. she hesitated for a moment, spotting a rather large brood, full of red headed children before quickly turning away. she felt a tiny pang in her chest but brushed it away just as quickly. things would be better this way.
she quickly realized though, that the weasleys were the only people she knew going into her year and onto the train, and she couldn't very well sit with them. she felt the painful shyness she'd thought had disappeared when she'd befriended the twins welling up inside her at the prospect of having to find a seat somewhere alone.
"first year?" a voice cut into her thoughts from behind her.
she turned around, face growing hot as a blush flooded her cheeks, and nodded quickly to the boy standing behind her. she noticed that his robes were plain, just like hers- no colors yet to represent the house. as if reading her mind, he shot her a bright smile. "i am too. we can see if we can find a cart together if you'd like."
she was mildly shocked at the display of generosity from the boy, but tried to keep it hidden behind a hesitant smile. she nodded again as he stepped up beside her and they started walking together.
"you don't talk much, do you?" she flushed a darker shade as they slipped into an empty cart. he just grinned at her and kept on. "my name is cedric diggory by the way, but you can call me ced."
"thestia black-greengrass," she said quietly as she gave his outstretched hand a shake. She held her breath- she knew the connotation the black name held.
"that's a bit of a mouthful, isn't it? do you have a nickname or something you like to be called for short?"
her mind instantly went back to the summers being chased around the garden by fred and george, screaming as they went.
"so which of us is it then, thessie?"
"ginny keeps going on about needing another girl in the house ."
"we're even letting you pick-"
"maybe pickings the problem, gred-"
"or maybe she's scared to hurt one of our feelings, forge-"
"or maybe we're both just too handsome for you to choose only one of us, eh, thessie?" they finished together, the lot of them tumbling around in a giggling mess.
they'd always used it to tease her, but it still felt wrong letting him use the name that she'd only ever let fred and george use, so she settled lamely on a soft "thess is alright, i suppose."
"thess it is then," he said with a grin, and she felt her stomach unclench slightly, relaxing a little further back into her seat.
