Chapter 12

One Friday afternoon, Bella was fixing up her truck. Nicole was outside, too, watching Blake run around. A week had gone by since Carlisle told her he was a vampire. This was the longest she had gone without seeing or talking to Carlisle since they started dating.

Just then, Edward pulled up. "Hello Bella. Nicole." He greeted.

"Edward!" Blake said.

"And Blake." Edward said.

"Hi." Bella said. "What are you doing here?"

"I came to invite to come to my house tomorrow." Edward said. "I want my family to you."

"What!" Bella said. "What if they don't like me?"

"So, you're worried they won't like you, instead of being in a house full of vampires." Edward said.

"I guess." Bella said.

Edward turned to Nicole. "Nicole, you're welcome to join." He said. "I know Carlisle would like to see you and the girls want to see Blake."

"I'll think about it." Nicole said. Edward nodded. He got in his car and drove off. "Blake, come on inside." Nicole said. "Dinner's going to be ready soon."

Blake ran over to Nicole and she lifted him into her arms, carrying him inside.

The next afternoon came. "So?" Bella asked. "Are you coming with me to the Cullens?"

Nicole nodded. She still wasn't sure what to think about everything with the Cullens, but she missed Carlisle and wanted to see him.

"Edward's here." Bella said.

"Come on, Blake." Nicole said. She followed behind him and they got in Edward's car.

During the ride, Nicole kept checking to see if Blake was ok since he wasn't in a car seat. When they got to the house, the four got out of the car. Nicole took Blake's hand as they walked into the house.

Bella looked around in awe. "It's so light and open." She said.

"What did you expect?" Edward asked. "Dungeons, coffins, and moats?"

"Not the moats." Bella said.

"Not the moats." Edward repeated with a chuckle. Blake giggled. "Your aunt's funny, huh buddy?" Edward asked.

"Yeah." Blake said, still giggling.

"This is the only place where we don't have to hide." Edward said as he lead them up the stairs. He brought them into the kitchen, where the rest of them were. "Bella, this is Esme." Edward said. "My mother for all intents and purposes."

"It's wonderful to meet you, Bella. And it's great to see you again, Nicole." Esme said. "We made Italian for you guys."

"They already ate." Edward said. The bowl that Rosalie was holding dropped and broke into pieces. Nicole picked up Blake to keep him from getting too close to the glass.

"It's just that we know you guys don't eat." Bella said.

"That's very considerate." Carlisle said.

"Hi Bella. Nicole." Alice greeted as she and Jasper came into the room. She hugged them both and ruffled Blake's hair.

"I'm going to show you around the rest of the house." Edward said to Bella.

"Would Blake like something to eat?" Esme asked.

"Hungry bud?" Nicole asked, looking at Blake. Blake nodded. Nicole let Blake down.

"Come on." Carlisle said to Nicole.

Nicole looked at her son. "Be good and please be careful of the glass." She said. Blake nodded.

"Come this way, Blake." Esme said, taking his hand and leading him away from the glass.

Carlisle brought Nicole to his office. "I'm glad you came." He said as the two sat on the couch.

"Me too." said Nicole.

"How are you?" Carlisle asked.

"I'm alright." Nicole said. "How are you?"

"I'm good." Carlisle said.

"I'm sure you're thinking that I came here because I made up my mind." Nicole started. "But, I haven't decided anything, yet. I came here because I missed you and I wanted to see you. I'm sorry."

"You have nothing to be upset about or apologize for. You can take as long as you need to decide." Carlisle said as he pulled her closer to him.  "I know it's a lot to take in."

"I really did miss you." Nicole said.

"I missed you, too." Carlisle said, kissing her on the top of the head.

Nicole looked around Carlisle's office. She saw many pictures that were clearly from a different time. She stopped at a picture that had four men in it. Three of them were up front and the fourth one was in the back of the picture, in the corner. Nicole realized it was Carlisle. By the type of clothes they were wearing, it confirmed for her that he was from a different century. Now she had questions going through her mind.

"You can ask any questions you have." Carlisle said.

Nicole looked up at him. "How did you know?" Nicole asked.

Carlisle hesitated for a moment. Even though he knew it would be better for her, he didn't want to scare Nicole off by whatever he told about what he was.

"When we're turned into vampires, all of our senses are heightened and enhanced." Carlisle started. "Like our sight, smell, speed, strength, and hearing. I could hear Edward, from his bedroom on the third floor, saying that you had some questions."

"But, how did he know?" Nicole asked. "I never said it out loud."

"Along with our senses, certain traits are enhanced, as well." Carlisle explained. "Sometimes they can be enhanced into something physical, that's called a gift. Edward said he was very perceptive as a human, so he's able to read people's minds as a vampire."

"Do you all have gifts?" Nicole asked.

"Not all of us have something turned physical like that." Carlisle replied. "But, we all have certain traits that were enhanced. Alice and Jasper have gifts like Edward. Alice can see the future and Jasper can feel and manipulate people's emotions."

"Do you have a gift?" Nicole asked.

"No." Carlisle said. "But, like I said, I had certain traits that were enhanced."

"I bet I know what it is." Nicole said.

"And what would that be?" Carlisle asked.

"Your compassion." Nicole said.

"You would be correct." Carlisle said. Nicole smiled. "What questions were you thinking about?" Carlisle asked.

"Wh-when were you turned?" Nicole asked, stuttering a bit.

"I was born in 1640." Carlisle answered. "I was turned in 1663 at the age of 23."

Nicole's eyes widened. "You were born in the 1600's?" She asked.

Carlisle nodded. "I promise I not trying to scare you." He said. "I'm just trying to help you understand."

"I don't know what to do." Nicole said. "It's a lot to take in, but I don't want to be away from you."

"Take it one day at a time, then." Carlisle said. "If at some point you can't handle it, I'll understand."

Nicole nodded. "I think I've had enough for one day." She said.

"I can take you and Blake, if you want." Carlisle said.

"Yes please." Nicole said.

"Come on." Carlisle said.

The two walked out of the office. Nicole went to go find Blake and Carlisle took them home.
