Chapter Twenty-Two

WAKANDA

The moment Yelena and Wanda had seen how bad the burns had gotten they had raced onto the quinjet and towards Wakanda. The moment they got there Shuri helped Bruce wheel Claire off of the quinjet and towards their infirmary where all the equipment was set up.

Shuri immediately scans her body and halts over the heart. "Her heart... it's not even beating how is she still alive?"

"The stones..." Bruce states quietly and then the realization hits him. "Her heart can't take the power of the stones but the stones are keeping her alive. We need to remove her heart. The stones will serve as her new one." Bruce states and Shuri just nods, trusting Bruce in what he was doing.

Both immediately started on the procedure. An hour later Bruce lifted Claire's blackened heart out of her body and onto a tray. Shuri held her breath as they both watched Claire. Three minutes later and nothing had happened. "Come on... come on Claire." Bruce mutters.

"Bruce look!" Shuri says pointing towards the burns. They were slowly fading leaving Claire's skin looking new and fresh. The large hole in her chest was closing itself up Claire's body started to lift off of the table and Bruce and Shuri backed up.

A moment later Claire was standing in front of them, looking around until she spotted Bruce. "Bruce! What happened!? Where are we?" Bruce just ignored her, walking over and hugging her.

Claire's eyebrows raised as she looked over and spotted Shuri who just shrugged, a large grin on her face. Claire just pays Bruce's back awkwardly before he pulled away. "You don't know how happy I am you're alive." He says and she just raised her eyebrows not questioning it.

"Where's Wanda?" She asks and Shuri beckons for her to follow her. They walk out of the infirmary and towards the large group that was standing with T'Challa and a stressed looking Wanda, Yelena, Nat and Melina.

"Wanda!" Claire called out and wanda looks up and runs straight towards her, jumping into Claire's arms. Claire catches her, spinning her around once and breathing in her scent. She knew she had nearly died because of the stones that were in her chest but that they had also saved her. They were a part of her now and she wasn't going to let them go.

Wanda clings to Claire, crying before getting down and looking up at her. "You can't die. You cant you cant die." She says and Claire smiles slightly looking at her.

"I won't die. I'm here, I'm alive."

"You can't leave me." Wanda says as tears stream down her face, "You have to die after me." She says and Claire laughs, pulling her into a hug.

"I wont leave you. I promise." She states and Wanda just stands there hugging her. Claire opens her arms so that Yelena and Nat could get in the hug as well and all four girls stand in a large hug.

A few minutes later they all pull away and Wanda wipes her eyes, still staying close to Claire as if she would disappear at any given moment. "So what happened?" Claire asks looking at Bruce and Shuri, "Why are we here?"

Bruce and Shuri both look at each other grimacing and everyone eyes narrow. "How'd you get the burns to go?" Melina asks suspiciously and Bruce takes a deep breath.

"Promise not to freak out?" He asks and everyone nods. "Claire's heart was failing. It wasn't beating at all when we got her into the room but her body was still alive because the stones kept it alive. We figured if we... took Claire's heart out the stones would replace it and we were right." Bruce says and everyone's eyes widen.

"So I... I don't have a heart?" Claire asks quietly and Bruce shakes his head.

"The stones act as your heart now. Their power was too much for yours to take which was causing your coma like state and the burns and black veins. But you're alive which is what matters." He says and Claire just nods, wrapping her arms around wanda and resting her chin on her head.

"Why don't we go rest a bit." Wanda says softly, pulling away from Claire and holding her hand firmly. Claire just nods, her face void of any emotion.

Wanda gently pulls Claire away from the group and towards their room T'Challa had given them. When they were gone Bruce turned to the group but Nat beat him to talking. "What else is there Bruce? If her heart failed whos to say the rest of her organs aren't going to fail as well? She needs her organs Bruce!"

"Natasha, I don't know. For now she's alive and she's okay. It's a shock to her for now knowing she doesn't have a real heart, but she will get over it. We just need to take it one step at a time. She harnesses more power than anyone in the universe, we have to teach her how to control that power now."

"Fine...." Natasha says slowly before walking off to her own quarters. It was going to be a big adjustment for everyone on the team.
