Chapter Twenty-Nine

Claire woke up on her couch, Max licking her face as a wake up call. She chuckled, pushing his face away from her before getting up and stretching, putting Max's food together before preparing eggs for herself.

A fresh layer of snow had fallen last night, covering most of the ground in the white powder. She ate quickly before changing and going outside. She left max in the house because he couldn't come with her on her daily walks to the avengers compound to watch over.

As she walked she hummed a quiet tune, enjoying the cool chill to the air. As she got to the compound she saw everyone was already outside so she hid in the tree line, watching them all.

"And you're sure it's her?" Melina asks and Clint, Yelena, Nat and Wanda all nod. "Alright well then lead the way." Melina states and they all start walking towards the trees.

Claire's breath catches in her throat. They had seen her face yesterday. They knew she was alive now. She immediately starts sprinting through the trees, hearing shouts from behind her as the avengers saw her running.

She sprinted through the trees, her breath coming out in puffs as she leaped over a fallen tree, landing and continuing to run. She made her way back towards the cabin, opening the door and grabbing her weapons before grabbing Max and ushering him out. "Come on boy," she says hurriedly, continuing to run towards the large frozen lake, max bounding after her.

When she got there, she quickly stepped on the lake, checking to make sure it was frozen solid. When it didn't crack max started following after her as she slowly made her way across the ice. "Claire!" She heard Nat scream, looking back to see all the avengers standing at the edge. She continues to walk, the ice starting to crack. Max starts walking towards her and Claire puts her hand up to stop him as the ice continues to crack. Max whines softly, right before the ice gives way underneath Claire, sucking her down and into the frigid water.

The moment her body was submerged her body went into shock, the ice cold water freezing her movement as she tried to struggle to get up past the ice again.

On land, everyone watched in horror as Claire was sucked under the ice water and Wanda screamed, "Tony help her!" She shouts, covering her mouth as tears streamed down her face.

Tony shoots up in the sky, plunging down into the water. There was no movement for two minutes besides the water lapping over the sides of the large hole Tony had created in the ice when he had blasted through it. "Come on... come on tony." Yelena mutters, and a moment later tony flies back out of the water, a limp and shivering Claire in his arms.

"I'm taking her back to the compound, hurry up. Her body temperatures too low and she inhaled a lot of water." He says, blasting off towards the compound, the rest sprinting through the forest, Max at their heels.

When they get back and rush into the lab Bruce and Tony are working on Claire. She was pale, ice crystals in her hands, her lips blue under the oxygen mask. Tony takes it off, rolling her on her side as she heaves up water. Wanda rushes over, using her powers to help warm her up while everyone rushes around the compound getting blankets and heaters.

"Claire oh my god..." Wanda mumbles, "you're alive" she says, tears streaming down her face as she places her hand on Claire's forehead, Claire leaning into her warm hand. "I missed you Wands..." she mumbles, her eyes closed as she continued shivering, Bruce gently easing an IV into her arm as everyone started piling blankets on top of her to warm her up.

Wanda leans down, placing her lips gently against Claire's forehead, pulling back and resting her head on Claire's. "I missed you too..." she says quietly, stepping away so Bruce could come over and out the oxygen mask back on her.

She lets out a shuddering breath before walking towards her room where vision was waiting. "You found her." He states and wanda nods, sitting down on her bed and looking at the floor. "Do you still love her?"

"Vision i- I can't do this right now okay? So please- please just leave me alone." She says and vision just looks at her before standing and phasing through the wall and leaving. Wanda put her head in her hands and ran them through her hair.

She wanted to be with Claire. But that meant leaving vision. But she loved Claire more, but she didn't want to hurt vision. But she loved Claire.

Meanwhile, in the lab Max was laying at the foot of the hospital bed Claire was sleeping on, his head on his paws as he looked at his owner, Nat and Yelena sitting on either side of her bed and stroking the puppy.

"I can't believe she's alive Nat." Yelena says quietly, looking at her sister who was still shaking slightly.

"And she's been looking after us all these years. She's taken four bullets for me." Nat says quietly.

"I can't imagine how lonely she must of been. We thought we had lost her because she was dead, but her actually being alive and knowing she couldn't talk or let us know she was okay in order to protect us must have been so much more painful." Yelena says quietly and Nat nods, stroking maxs fur gently.

"I'm just glad she's back." She says and Yelena nods. The beeping of machines filled their ears as silence took over them, the steady rythm of Claire's breathing and the swoosh of maxs tail calmed them.

Their sister had returned to them.

She truly was their guardian Angel.
