Chapter 22
Thud, thud, thud.
The sound of my feet racing over stone match the sound of my racing heart as they world blurs past me, a smear of houses and dim lights in the night. The sound of gun shots echo through the sky and my stomach clenches.
This is it.
I soon turn a corner and freeze. Jack, Eddie and various boys are pressed against walls, roofs and large objects, shooting at the house. From the door way and the roof of Xavier's headquarters, I see sparks of fire as our enemies shoot. My heart squeezes, but I force myself to clear my mind. I step backwards quickly and climb a roof, keeping as flat as possible as I crawl forwards and push myself onto the roof that Xavier's boys are shooting from. Heart in my throat, I crawl forwards on my belly, aware that if they turn around, I'm dead. I look down and spot a tiny window just below me. I bite my lip, wondering if I'll fit. I look through and see it's dark and empty - perfect. Slowly, lowering my legs onto the narrow sill, I balance myself as I take the rear end of my gun and smash the lock. Pushing the windows open, I slowly lower my body down, glancing up one last time before landing completely. I catch Jack's eye and he nods.
My feet touch the floor and he disappears from my view. The whole room is bathed in darkness and I shiver at the cold. My feet slowly test the board and I cross the room, my eyes darting everywhere. My gun slips out of my waistband and my fingers tiighten around it. The room leads to a hallway and stairs. I slowly descend them and arrive at a large room, also empty. I look around, spotting a table with a set of keys sprawled out carelessy on top.
There's something wrong.
I pick up the keys and look through the keyhole of half dozen doors before I reach one that holds a dim light and a small, bundled silhouette next to it. I try a few keys before I find the right one and I open the door quitely, looking around the room for any signs of danger.
'Robin?' I whisper. A head suddenly appears out of the small bundle and my insides quiver with relief as I see Robin. He jumps up, looking incredibly skinny, before running to me at full speed, jumping into my arms and embracing me with the strenght of a beast.
'Hey kid,' I whisper, crouching down and kissing his wet cheeks. He sobs and clings on to my skirt, breaking my heart into a million pieces. I kiss his hair before lifting his head so that he looks directly at me.
'Listen,' I say, my hold firm on his chin, 'we're not safe and we need to go - now.'
'Yer got that right,' says a deep male voice. I jump up and push Robin behind me whilst whipping out my gun and pulling back the safety. Three tall, muscular silhouettes block my view and I tighten my hold on the weapon. Three more appear behind them and a few doors open, revealing more men than I could possibly dream to fight alone.
'Yer surrounded,' he says.
'You don't say,' I snap, my fear covered as sarcasm.
