"Hear there's a new student?" My big friend Luke bumped into my shoulder. I adjusted my backpack strap.
"What's your point."
He frowned. "Come on, I heard it's a transfer student from Japan."
"So like, not a white person," I said.
Luke looked disgusted. "You make me unhappy just being around you."
I ran a hand through my hair. "And you're still happy and we've been friends for years."
He smiled uncertainly. "Well, I mean... it's not like I could leave you."
I snickered. "Nerd."
Then, out of nowhere, someone rammed into me from the back. "Hey Leo!"
"You could have killed me," I said. Parker chuckled and rested his arm on my shoulder.
"How's it going little man? Are you excited about the transfer student?"
I looked at him in disgust. "Why is everyone so goddamn excited for some transfer student? Like what if they turn out to be really weird or mean or something?"
"No dude I heard a rumor that someone saw this Asian girl in a grocery store this week and he's never seen her before, and she's like, super fucking hot."
"Parker I have a girlfriend I'm not really worried about this."
He rolled his eyes. "Well I don't have one that's why I'm excited."
"Jesus Fucking Christ, Parker," I sighed.
"Watch the JC," Luke mumbled harshly.
"Yeah well anyway, I bet you could find on who already goes here just fine, man."
"I know but, like, what if the new student is really hot?"
I sighed. "You shouldn't get your hopes up. Maybe she's just another goddamn white kid who went to Japan for some mission trip."
"She could still be attractive, Leo," Parker argued.
"But if she's a bitch? You're clearly oblivious to her actual personality," I said. "Like sure if she's hot then that's great but I mean if you don't like hanging out with her or doing anything besides sex then maybe it's a red card," I said passive-aggressively.
"Leo I didn't ask for your philosophical views on everything. Like how the fuck did you have so many girlfriends with a mindset like that?"
I grinned. "I'm hot and I have a big dick."
Parker hit me.Our teacher had bags under his bags on his eyes. It was like he got wasted last night and did meth for the first time. I slugged back into my seat and looked out the window. Transfer student my ass, I thought. Maybe Parker will get his girlfriend. But to be honest, Parker could get any girl he wanted. He plays sports, is a genuinely nice person, and is good looking. So are all my friends. Like Luke. He's one of those people where you can take a photo of him off guard and he will always look great. It's also unfair because he's almost a foot taller than me, and is on three varsity sports teams. Sometimes, I look at him and regret all my life's decisions and my entire existence. But I don't think many people see him that way because he's just another one of my friends.
Suddenly, the door creaked and opened.
"Oh yeah, this is the new student."
Or Parker's new girlfriend, I thought. But, completely disregarding my immediate thoughts of a new student from Japan, someone different stepped in. She had short, dark brown hair cut just above her shoulder, choppy and wavy. She looked like someone you would see in a selfie on tumblr, with big eyes and perfect eyebrows, plump lips and a small nose. Her face wasn't quite Asian, she looked more like a mix. Her skin was like a porcelain doll's, and her ear had at least five different earrings on it. She stood with confidence and arrogance, though she was only about five feet off the ground. She had one of those shirts with the really thin stripes and light skinny jeans ripped top to bottom. And, superstar adidas with a gold logo and black stripes. To be honest, I didn't expect anyone like her to arrive at our school. Everything about her looked cleanly polished, and she looked very out of place. Not because she wasn't a white girl, but how she talked and acted. When people threw questions at her, she responded bluntly and snappy, like a mom who had a bad day and came home to kids in trouble. I looked over at Parker, and he held a thumbs up and grinned. I shook my head and smiled.
"You can go sit by the back over there," our teacher said, pointing to the vacant seat in front of me. She strutted over and put her maroon Kanken backpack down, and a Pepe pin caught my eye. Now, I would have said something if it wasn't silent in the room, and Parker wasn't staring at this poor girl."I told you she would be hot."
I set my tray down at a table outside and turned to face Parker.
"She doesn't look your type though."
He scoffed. "Bro this bitch is banging."
"Yeah her ass is like... really nice," said Jordan.
"Well she's not bad looking..."
Parker laughed. "You're just saying that because you have a girlfriend."
"Look I already told you that I'm going to break up with her soon it's not that big of a deal," I almost shouted.
"Speak of the devil," Luke whispered. I froze up.
"Hey Leo," Cameron said, wrapping her arm around me and kissing me on the lips. I wiped my mouth and wiped it on Luke.
"Yo."
"That new girl isn't even pretty. It shows guys like you shouldn't get your hopes up, right?" she giggled.
"Nah she was hot," Parker said.
"Yeah like... maybe even hotter than you Cameron," Jordan said uncertainly.
"Did you even look at her? She's as flat as a board. And a chink."
"Bitch don't be racist," Max said, as he sat down, squeezing his way between Parker and Jordan. "You're just jealous."
"Well then what do you think Leo?"
"I don't care."
Max rolled his eyes. "Well Leo doesn't count because he's like, gay, or something."
"I'm not gay. Luke probably is."
All eyes went to him, as he was taking a bite of the peanut butter and jelly sandwich his mom gave him. "What? No..."
We all snickered. "He would be though," Cameron agreed.
Then Cameron left and everyone started talking about the new girl again, so I went on my phone.By the end of the school day, the excitement died down. It goes to show how boring public school is when a whole grade gets excited about a transfer student. As if the lowly spirit days we had here weren't enough to hold them over. But luckily, maybe by tomorrow, she'll just be another prisoner in hell- I mean student at Nishiko. Leaving the home room, everyone was packing up their belongings and heading to their lives outside of school.
"Hey, I like your Pepe pin," I suddenly said to the new girl.
She turned around, confused for a moment, then smiled. "Thanks, I didn't think people here would know who he was."
"This school is meme trash," I told her, "I would be surprised if someone didn't know him."
"That's cool."
"I didn't catch your name by the way, what was it again?"
"Kami," she snapped.
Kami? Like paper or god?
"What's yours?"
"Leo."
"I though you would look... ah... different?" she drawled.
"What do you mean?"
"Nothing... I've just... heard some things about you."
"I'm not surprised."
"Seems right. I guess you're not the first face that comes to mind when 'hot boy' is said."
I didn't know whether or not to feel offended. "I guess the same goes for you when someone says transfer student."
"Leo, I'd have to say that despite the rumors, you don't seem that bad," she told me.
I laughed. "That's one of the nicest things someone's said to me. From someone like you.."
"like me?"
"You called a kid jackass today."
She laughed. "You do have a point."
"I'd do the same but, everyone already hates me, and I don't want to make that wore."
"Well, maybe I'll tell those girls that you're not so bad after all-" she grabbed her head suddenly. "Ow..."
"You okay?"
"Yeah sometimes I just..."
She looked up and her eyes were a deep red. Not the whites, the pupils. We stared at each other for a few seconds then she went back to holding her head.
"I think it's just a bad headache or..."
"Hey Kami..."
She looked up.
"Your eyes are red," I said.
"Oh no...."
"What?"
"Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck... I can't let anyone know..."
"Know what?" I leaned towards her.
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a black blade. "Sorry man but... I can't trust you so early..."
She was pacing towards me. "I don't think you know this but knives are illegal in schools."
Her eyes shone a deep red. "Sorry-" and she shoved her blade right through my abdomen.
The pain was unbearable, but her face remained stoic as she pulled out the blade. There was blood all over my hands just from touching my wound, and my shirt was destroyed. And yet, I found myself grinning with pride because she didn't know something that I did.
