(Dog's POV)
Dog couldn't but look at the other ruined Rivertowers across the long river. Everything beyond the ruined Rivertowers was just heavy mist. Back a thousand year ago when the heavy storm came it wiped out and destroyed everything leaving everything in ruins and leaving it in the mist. People from The Rivertowers guards who went exploring the other half of the of Destiny (the continent) never made it back so in the north it was known as The Lands of no Return. The perpose of The Rivertowers was let riders come across the river sense their was no other way around the river only if your going by boat. Destiny was devided into two parts. One was the north and other south. Their was a large river going across Destiny and the only ways to get across to any part of Destiny with a horse or by foot were The Rivertowers. The Rivertowers had bridges they can lift up and down. The Rivertowers hasn't lifted down the bridge sense the last riders.
One story goes that the men who entered in The Lands of no Return were killed by the people who died by the storm and added their souls to the mist.
Commander of The Rivertower #2 was named Greger Grimes. Sense their wasn't really much to do at The Rivertowers, but just stand and watch the ruined towers on the other side of the river. The commander just gets drunk and falls asleep while the other men just guarded the towers.
Their was a total of five Rivertowers and only three were active with the same amount of men(thirty). Their was two towers identical to each other and we're face together like looking at a mirror. Behind the towers were buildings for the men to sleep, eat, read, and shower. They also had an armory and other places to carry on their duties. All of the towers and buildings were inside a stone wall. The wall had three layers of large stone that seemed to hold when bandits attack. The men of the Rivertowers trained everyday for at least three hours a day.
"Fucking useless towers. Got nothing to do all day, but stand and watch the fucking ruined towers and the bloody mist," a man said next to Dog. Dog didn't know the man so he must have been a new recruit. "Everyone acts like that when they first come here," Dog wanted to say, but by the looks of the man he didn't want to anger him. The man continued, "Fucking king making me patrol the bloody towers for three years. Fucking ridiculous." Dog smiled, "When I first got here the king gave me ten years. I had a wife and five sons. I left them seven years ago. My biggest boy was ten, so now he has to be fifteen." The man looked at Dog. Dog looked back and the man looked the other way and said, "I'm sorry. Just... well...to be honest I really don't have a family. I was basterd-born. My mom was a whore and when I was born she abandoned me. Look at me complaining. I got no family looking forward to see and only got to serve three years, while you got to serve ten and you got a wife and kids." Dog patted the man on the back. "My name is Sixto Windblown," the man said putting his hand out. "John. John Ghost, but people call me Dog," said Dog grabbing onto Sixto hand to handshake. They both smiled and looked at The Ruined Towers.
The next day Dog practiced with a crossbow. Dog loves the crossbow. Just the way it sounds when you shoot it. The only thing he hated was it took forever to reload. The commander was watching from a distance and Dog took notice. He aimed and took the shot. The bolt hit the dummy where Dog wanted it to hit; in the head. Dog looked to the commander and the commander nodded and walked way.
Sixto walked to Dog in fear, "Dog...you got to see this." Dog dropped his crossbow and said, "Why, something happened?" Sixto pulled Dog to his feet. "Noises," said Sixto.
Sixto lead Dog to the top of the tower. Men of The Rivertowers were watching too. "What's going-," Dog was interrupting by Sixto shushing him, "Listen." Dog didn't hear anything, but remained quiet.
Dog listen more closely and he did hear something. In the distance the men heard a loud roar within the mist followed by a shadow moving. Whatever the thing was it flew away.
"Gods be good," said Dog, "that thing was a Dragon.
