Liara.
Grief. That was word which could sum up Liara’s life in one word. That was all she had all through and all that she expected of her life these days. She looked at her mother and she knew there was no hope and so she was going to go all the way today. This was it. She wasn’t gonna play the depended second fiddle to nobody. She stole a glance out of the window behind her mother and saw the moonlight glow, she saw the stars shine and that’s what made her want to live her life, she remembered her father had told her when she small that if he ever left her then all she had to do was seek a star and hold on to it cause it would be his and then he had sung a lullaby for her.
“Do you not care about what happens to me?” She shouted but her mother’s face tightened.
“Watch your mouth, young lady.” She snapped and tears filled her eyes.
“Typical. All you ever cared about was appearances. And John. Why don’t you just leave me and run down to him!” she shouted again and her mother took a step towards her.
“Whatever I do is never enough for you. Your father died when you were 5, Liara! He left me to take care of you and your brother and I gave you everything you ever needed! Kept you in so much luxury! All that money!” She spat at her and Liara shivered.
“Yes, mum. You gave me every materialistic thing a girl could ever dream of. But I didn’t need them, I wanted your love and you never gave me that. Do you even love me?” She whispered and she felt tear’s prick at her eyes. All her life all she had ever wanted was for her mother to love her, to see her with them adoring eyes she always had for John.
“You can’t even answer me, can you.” Liara demanded but she knew it wasn’t a question just the truth finally hit home. Something inside her snapped.
“I do not see a point of this discussion. Go back to your room.” Her mother ordered and she laughed bitterly.
“That’s rich, ain’t it? But guess what? I’m not obliged to listen to you anymore. Hell, I don’t even care.” She said and her brother walked in.
“That’s no way of talking, Laira.” John snapped at her and she stiffened.
“Shut up and mind your own business.” She literally growled at him, there was such fury flowing in her and pain and if John messed with her she was gonna rip his head off.
“Liara!” He shouted at her and she turned back to her mother.
“Well, you’re welcome to each other. I don’t wanna stay with you guys.” She shouted at them both and she was gonna run away when she heard John laugh.
“She’s jealous like always, ma.” He said and Liara stopped. She thought she was gonna burst.
“Jealous, John? Of you? That is not even possible. You’re a stupid ass. A punk. I have a better life that you, I don’t want any aspect of my life to be any like yours.” She hurled at him and he took a staggered step forward, she smelled the whiskey on him but she didn’t care this one last time she would show him.
“Liara! Do not hurl false accusations at your brother!” Her mother said instead and the tears were back.
“Look at him, mum. He’s drunk, he can’t even stand on his own feet. He was gonna hit me!” She shouted and her mother pulled John back.
“Don’t lie to me.” She shouted at Liara.
“I’m not.” She whispered and hung her head.
“You are. You have been lying to me for the past 15 years of your life!” She shouted again and Liara broke down, everything that was caged in her came hurling out.
“You’re pathetic, you know that? You have this image of him as your perfect son in your head and nothing I say ever gets to you! I’m not lying! I used to come to you and tell you he hit me and you used to snap at me, I told you he was drunk, stoned to his ears and you wouldn’t believe me. I told you he took drugs and you wouldn’t believe me even when you could SEE what the drugs were doing to him and yet I loved him, mum! Always did. But this is enough, I’ve had all I can take of your bias, I hate him, I don’t know what I ever did to deserve a brother like him!” She shouted and she saw John stiffen, he clenched his hands and tried to take a step forward.
“I’m gonna kill you.” He growled at her and she laughed.
“Go ahead. Put me out of my misery.” She shouted back but her mother caught on to him.
“I have never been bias in my life.” She said each word with so much tenacity.
“Oh, yeah? Of all the things I said you only caught that, did you? Who are you trying to kid, mum? I was there, I lived it. I was small and I used to listen to you come in my room and walk straight to his bed, sing him lullaby’s, cuddle him and you used to leave me cold. I would be sick and you had me fetching my own pills and whenever he did you went berserk. John wanted a new expensive car so Liara had to bust her ass in work and pay her school fees. John didn’t have time so you would give me his homework. I was your freaking doormat, mum!” She shouted, frustrated and so angry. Her fists clenched and she felt rage, red hot rage travel in her, she was beyond herself. She looked at the windows that overlooked the moon and she heard lightning. She looked at her mother and there was no emotion there, she only saw the tightness of her expression and annoyance.
“Yes, mum. This is how I turned out to be, this is what you made me.” She said quietly and then she went up to her room, took her packed suitcases and bags and ran down.
“Guess what, you bitch? I hate you, too.” Her brother said and she smiled at him.
“At least that’s something. I’m leaving. I don’t wanna stay with you guys, anymore.” She said and John smiled, she saw such joy in his eyes that her confidence nearly broke down. But then she heard the lullaby her father used to sing to her and she walked up to him and when she was real close she slapped him so hard that he fell down all her rage came out and she stared at the window again, she didn’t know how or what happened but suddenly the glass at the window shattered. It snapped her mother out of her shock.
“I have had enough! It’s all because of you, Liara! All because you!” Her mother shouted at her and she raised shocked eyes to her mother. What had she done? Her mother was shaking and John was still sprawled on the floor. Liara didn’t know what to do. She was so confused with everything but then she saw John get up and he picked up his baseball bat. She knew he was gonna come after her but her mother stopped him.
“She’s not worth it, John.” Her mother said and those words hit her so hard she always crumpled. Her mother hated her. She picked up her bags and walked to the door.
“Take care, mum. Of him, too.” She muttered and then she walked out of that door leaving her history, her family, the only people she dared love behind crying for what she could never had, what she always wanted so bad. She raised her head to the moon above her.
“Tell him I miss him.” She whispered to the moon and the moonlight around it glistened, she gave him a tremulous smile and then walked away.
